Trapped in the city of Budapest was the 9th SS Korps. In a desperate attempt to free their fellow SS Truppen, the 4th SS Korps struck in the early morning hours of New Year's Day. The Soviet 135th Rifle Corps was taken completely by surprise and the SS panzers drove quickly to the Danube. However, the Russians soon recovered and pushed the Nazis back. Budapest fell quickly afterward and only 800 men escaped the trap.
