Alright, you want to play WaW against another person but you have not tried PBEM before and you are wondering what to do. Read on.

1. First you find an opponent (or several if you intend to play with more than 2 people).
2. You make certain all of you have the same version.
3. You agree who are to play which side (or which nations if more than 2 people are to play) and which options are to be used.
4. The German player is now ready to start the game. He does the following:
  • On the opening screen he checks the PBEM box
  • Next to each of the 5 powers a small number appears. He right-clicks on those so it says 1 next to Ger and Jap and 2 next to Rus, Chi and the WA assuming a 2 player game. If more people are playing you adjust the numbers so the nations controlled by the same player have the same number.
  • After doing that he opens the game option screen and make certain the correct options are selected
  • Finally, he starts the game

5. During the first turn of the game each player will be promted for a passwordas as he starts to play. Enter something you are certain you can remember. Without that password you cannot open future turns of the game at all.
6. Now the German player plays his turn. If he is also playing Japan the game continues to the Japanese turn which he plays too. Once he is done with production he is promted to save the game. Do that.
7. After playing your turn and saving the game you open your email program and mail the save game file you just made in WaW to the other/next player in the game. Do not bother zipping the file as its already well compressed.

During play you should note that it is considered cheating if you reload the same game multiple times to try different approaches. If you do so a number will show for your opponent when he loads the game informing him of your reloading (though this sometimes bugs out so do not start yelling loudly at your opponent if you see this number).

If you load the game and start playing but get interrupted in the middle of a turn (usually by a woman, hopefully for a pleasent reason) you should save the game at that point and reload once you resume. That is not cheating but rather the intended method and will not leave a mark for your opponent to see.

If you happen to crash or otherwise have to reload the same save file you should let you opponent know so he does not think you are trying to cheat.

Finally, you might want to consider making the game a ladder game. Not because the ladder is a place to brag about how great you are at playing WaW (that never works at dinner parties anyway) but because the ladder is a good way to show that you are a reliable opponent that do not disappear in the middle of a game.

Enjoy.
