Desert War Updated to version 1.0.4!

You can download the update from here and unzip the exe. After that, you are good to run the exe and install your patch by following the on-screen instructions.

Version 1.0.4 Changelog
======================

NEW FEATURES
- Unit strength now shown in Men/Vehicles/Planes/Guns.
Right click unit icon to see value (top left of display).
Battle Report (right click battle) shows unit damage.
Turn info button now shows total combined Unit strengths/casualties per turn/total casualties.

NEW SCENARIO ADDED:

43_09_Tough Old Gut--Salerno

Force Level: Medium Complexity: Medium Advantage: Axis

Groundscale: Each hex = 2500 meters

Historical Background: The battle of Salerno was fought as part of the Italian campaign between 9-16 September 1943. On 9 September, the 5th (US) Army landed on the west coast of Italy in the vicinity of the port city of Salerno. This operation was known as Avalanche and consisted of the US 6th Corps and the X (UK) Corps. The purpose of this operation was threefold. First, eliminate Italy from the war. Second, tie down German forces. Third, capture the major port and naval base at Naples. British X Corps was the main effort with primary objectives of seizing Salerno, capturing the Montecorvino Airfield and gaining control of the mountain passes the provided access to Naples to the north. The mission of 6th (US) Corps was to protect the right flank of X Corps.

"A cross-channel operation [in 1943] was utterly impossible. We could not even get across without the British showing us the way and taking us by the hand. We did not have the means. And so it was decided that we would take this matter up with Mr. Churchill, which we did. And that is where his persuasive eloquence first impressed me. He got up before a map with his pointer and he kept pointing to Gibraltar, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Sicily and Italy. Finally he said, 'We should slit the soft belly of the Mediterranean.' Well, my friends, I assure you, when I landed at Salerno, I found it was a tough old gut!" -- General Mark W. Clark, Commander US 5th Army

ALL SCENARIOS:

* Added strengths for men/guns/vehicles/planes.

Rats vs Ram
* Reduced number of turns from 12 to 9 to make the scenario more balanced in favor of the Italians.

Sidi Bou Zid
* Reduced number of turns from 15 to 12 to make the scenario more balanced in favor of the U.S.
* Added missing US grdAssets1_1.png image.

Salerno
* Added US navy1_1.png image.
* Add US and Royal Navy ship images for Salerno scenario.

I would not update until I finished playing these scenarios. Desert War v1.0.4 adds the counting of men/guns/vehicles/planes. You are playing scenarios that did not include this data when you started them. There were no bugs that I'm aware of in v1.0.3 so what you get in v1.0.4 are only new features and a new scenario (Salerno). There are no advantages provided to your current games by updating.

2 questions!
Why are the German unit strengths not shown? British and Italians are shown!

How are the numbers of strengths calculated? In the editor?

Need more info. Which scenario? Strengths shown where? On the icon? Side panel? Both? Are you playing with fog of war?

Attack and Defense strengths were calculated using Excel spreadsheets and then inputting the results into the game via the editor.

I'm not seeing this issue. Are you sure you have Achse (Axis) selected? What you are describing sounds like fog of war as seen by the Allies.

If kriegsnebel and Alliierte are selected you will see 100% of the Allies combat factors and some of the Axis based upon the intelligence collection capabilities of your land units and air reconnaissance assets.

Fog of war (kriegsnebel) looks like this playing as the Allies (alliierte). Some Axis units show numbers and some don't. Hope this helps.

You have to open the unit so you can see how many men, tanks or cannons the unit has! I'm trying to show a picture!

I see what your saying now. The data is there but it is not displaying. I'll pass this to the coder.

Yep, there's a problem there. It is missing the data, but it doesn't affect gameplay.

I think it's also the same for the Sollum scenario.

I will of course fix it for the next patch.

But if you don't want to wait for the next patch, what you can do is:

- Open the editor
- load the scenario (File -> Load at the top left)
- save the scenario (without changing a thing)

When the Editor loads a scenario, it sets the number the number of men/guns/vehicles in each unit.

Thanks,
Brian

In this case, it is a generic unit ballpark figure that will give you an indication of the size of the loss. The game engine as originally designed centers on percentage of losses; the data "numbers" of men/guns/vehicles/planes are used by the percentage of loss to give you "numbers". IOW, 25% loss of a generic infantry battalion with an assigned generic strength of 600 men means a display of 150 men lost...but if the actual assigned strength of an infantry battalion was 800 then 200 men were lost--but in either case, 25% of actual combat power was lost. In Stalingrad: Nightmare on the Volga, the assigned strength of each unit is managed separately...cuz you will be able to allocate replacements.

I have made! But still shows nothing to the Germans!
I think the problem is bigger ?!
This is for information only!

Thanks for help!

We are playing the Sollum scenario and just want to confirm that we are experiencing the same issue. For the Axis there are no numbers displayed for losses. It only shows losses in percentages. I forgot to look at the force size but I assume it is the same situation.

Yep, will fix, though I want to fix more than that so won't be there immediately.

So what am I talking about? Stuff like showing the pop up battle results (that shows when the cursor is over a battle) in Men/Guns etc, and having the ability to see a stacks total men/guns/vehicles in teh right hand pane, plus showing in that pane the info that you see when you press the K key (I'd say most people who have the gaame don't even realise there is a K key popup to see terrain info!!).
