It looks like another patch upgrade that isn't in the manual. What does this switch do on/off?

I can guess, but I would prefer an answer.

BTW, I have tried the search engine with the forum and don't seem to be using it correctly since I could not find PDU or this Allied Sub Doctrine. Some advise would be appreciated.

There is a file entitled Whats new...that lists all of the changes since time began...it can be found in your matrix games folder. There is a bit of documentation in that file...

The "Allied Sub Docrine" switch was an attempt to simulate the situation during the early part of the War when many US sub commanders were very reluctant to close with the enemy and so, despite having plenty of subs around, the US submarine force accomplished very little during the first six months of the Japanese expansion. Setting the switch to "on" lowers the odds that an Allied sub will attack a target.

Now, notice my careful use of "US" and "Allied" in the description above. That's because, unfortunately, the "Allied Sub Doctrine" doesn't reflect the situation with Dutch and British ships. But if you set ASD to "on", then not only do the US subs become useless until 1943, then so do the Brit and Dutch subs.

The Game already includes a routine that reduces the effectiveness of US submarine torpedoes prior to 1943. When you add ASD to it, the result is grim. So my recommendation to all is never, never use Allied Sub Doctrine.

Good luck -

Dave Baranyi

Unless, of course, you are playing the IJN - then you should insist on it!

Please note that what ADavidB posted is what it was supposed to do.  From what people reported in their games when they actually used it, it works exactly the same as Japanese Sub Doctrine.
