I forgot what the Japanese called it but before the ill-fated Operation K of Midway fame the IJN had some big flying boats refuel from a sub at French Frigate or some other uninhabited islet in the Hawaiian chain and proceed from there to bomb PH which they more or less missed due to bad weather). I was wondering if it is possible to use an AVD, AV, CS to support an offensive airstrike mission (I guess it would have to be at night) by seaplanes from a non-airbase/dot hex or if the ship would be considered a 1 sized airbase for offenbsive mission purposes.

If I remeber the RULES correctly you need a size 2 or larger airbase for STRIKE missions.

But yes in real life the Japanese did use EMILY Flying Boats for a night/dawn raid on Pearl which missed. It also screwed them b/c it gave away the fact that they could use French Frigate Shoals to refuel Sea Planes and the US placed some DDs during the Midway Operations so the IJN couldnt base any sub supported Sea Planes for Naval Searches.

If any of you remember the OLD War in the Pacific SPI "Boardgame" Emily's were the bane of the Allied player trying to get an unescorted merchie or Cruiser thruough to Australia. Because that TF might get spotted and then an EMILY point (representing 10 planes) carrying a torpedo would make an attack.... and we all know what kind of range those EMILY's have!

The game does not reflect all the roles of flying boats completely.  PBYs were used offensively as well as Emilys and Mavises.

I think it was in the 1000 Mile War, the book talks about in the Aleutians the PBYs were the only strike aircraft that could reach Attu and Kiska early in the campaign.   They wore out the PBYs with constant combat flying against those bases.  The gutsy flying boat guys were even doing shallow dive bombing attacks with them.  They didn't achieve all that much militarily, but it was a morale boost to know that the USN was doing something.

The game doesn't allow flying boats to be used in any kind of deliberate attack.  Which is probably for the good overall.  Players would probably over use them in the offensive role.  Flying boats were too expensive and too cumbersome to be used in the attack role all that much.

I believe it is correct to call the second Pearl raid Operation K as well. K was the ongoing campaign to stage planes out of the Marshalls for attack-reconnaissance raids that refueled at French Frigate Shoals. Alton Horn wrote his master's thesis on Operation K and subsequently published it as a book. I have the thesis but have yet to read it.
