Hey ho, I need some help from wargaming old timers here. I've been looking for the name of an old wargame released by a company called SPI. ( Strategic Publishing Inc. ? I guess) That game coverd WW2, with 2 huge maps depicting the world, ( filled in by hexes, and bearing large distances, such as Brazil occupying 4 hexes total) Units represented Corps/Armies, Air Groups, Flotillas, and so on. They had Armor, Infantry, ASW plane counters, Merchant shipping, and all countries were color-coded. ( Germany in grey, Italy in shade of red, US in olive drab, Japan in light yellow)
That game was out in the early 90's.
Any help is appreciated....

Hi,

I don't know about that game.

If it can be of some help, you can find lists of games SPI published here :
The SPI Compendium [costik.com]
Wikipedia's list of SPI games [wikipedia.org]
Web-Grognards[grognard.com] eventually.

Good luck.

JeF.

The game is "Global War" published by Simulations Publications Inc in 1975.

Hello.

Are you sure that it was an SPI game and that it was released in the 90s? SPI went belly-up long before that.

Try the games listed at this link Grognards. You'll probably have to search one-by-one. If the game sounds about right, check it on www.boardgamegeek.com - it may have a picture of the map.

I remember buying that one 'for completeness' but never actually playing it - it was my hardcore realism phase and this game didn't measure up.

I suspect it disappeared when my brother sold off my collection when I left home. Who knows, the copy going for $2.25 on (ebay) might be mine!

I have that game, Global War, and can dig it out of the bottom of the pile in the back of the closet if you want any detailed info regarding it.

I seem to remember that one of the more interesting aspects were designating very large areas of the world as "out of communications" where military operations were not considered possible, like the Amazon jungle and the African rain forest. Areas that one could operate military forces within were designated as "in communications".

Many years later SPI released a fine European theater WWII game called, of all things.....WWII. My weekly gaming group played that one many, many times.

Hi all, thanks again for your info. The name Global War does ring a bell, and yes, it was published long before I got around to play it. And yes, there were areas considered impassible. Big thanks again to Rhonda, Mike Jef and Hans.
