Using the 1977 schedule and division alignment, this association uses the teams from each franchise that finished the regular season with the highest winning percentage. Interestingly, of the 26 teams included, only 6 actually won the World Series that year. There are no Marlins, Rockies, D-Backs, or Rays. The White Sox and Phillies had two teams with identical winning percentages. I chose the 2005 White Sox over the 1983 Sox because they won the Series (plus LaRussa already had two other teams in here). I chose the 1976 Phillies over the 1977 Phils because the 1977 Phils won their division by a larger margin.

Sounds like a fun setup.

After dealing with some real-world issues.....Opening day for the Braves.

Greg Maddux went the distance and also went 3-3 at the plate with 2 RBI as the Braves hammered the Astros 10-4. Andruw Jones hit a pair of solo homers and Javy Lopez added a 3-run blast in support of Maddux, who allowed only a Derek Bell grand slam in the 4th. After Bell's homer, Maddux held the Astros hitless until the 9th inning. Shane Reynolds took the loss for Houston.

The Braves opened a 3-game series in LA against the Dodgers and were the victims of some Tommy John surgery. The crafty lefty held Atlanta to only 3 singles and a walk as the Dodgers won 3-0. The Braves never had a runner advance past first base. Willie Crawford knocked in 2 runs with a 2nd-inning triple. Denny Neagle pitched well, but took the loss.

Andres Galarraga's 2-run homer in the 4th inning pushed the Braves past the Dodgers 2-1. Tom Glavine, Rudy Seanez, and John Rocker held LA off the board for 8 innings, before the Dodgers tallied one in the 9th off Atlanta closer Kerry Ligtenberg. Glavine left the game in the 3rd inning with a strained quad. He will miss his next start, but will not go on the disabled list.

The Braves will have Thursday off before beginning a 12-game homestand with three against the Astros.

The Reds snapped the Braves' 6-game winning streak, 6-1. Fred Norman picked up the win for Cincy. John Rocker was wrongly charged with the loss. Rocker relieved starter Odalis Perez with the bases loaded in the 6th inning of a 1-1 game. Pittsburgh made it two straight against the Braves, winning 6-3 in 11 innings. Atlanta had a golden opportunity to win in the bottom of the 10th. With runners on 1st and 3rd and one out, Gene Garber induced Ryan Klesko to hit into a double play to end the inning. Kerry Ligtenberg was wrongly tagged with the loss. He entered the game in the top ofthe 11th with two runners on and no one out. He allowed both runs to score and gave up one of his own.
