Personnally, I'd like to see a "Japan allies with Germany in 1939" varient. It might be interesting to invade Indo-china from Hainin and Formosa and only having Akagi, Kaga, and Ryujo to cover the landings in the Indies. Perhaps US entry could be determined by how successful Japan is; sort of how the US did in the Atlantic. No help for the Allies in 1939, but then the US becomes gradually involved. Garrisons provided for French islands (like the US did for Iceland), old US destroyers released to Australia, US Naval escorts for convoys to Australia, and so on until the US enters the war. However, if by some chance Britain/Australia/New Zealand are winning against Japan, US aid becomes less likely, but if Japan is so successful that they're invading New Zealand and overrunning Australia, US intervention becomes a certainty.
