Black shoe officers = surface ship guys
Brown shoe officers = fliers.

There is a rift between the two to this day in the USN (or appears to be)...

Just a continuation of the battleship club vs. carrier club, which was probably preceded by the SoL club vs. frigate club . . . trireme club vs. quinquireme club, etc. Institutions always need their internal rivalries.

Sorry my friend, the rivalry predates any US carrier.Brown shoes for airdales (Navy spelling) were adopted sometime in 1916 due to a shortage of black shoe leather. Also , airdales originally wore riding boots. They were made for other services in brown. Also adopted was the avaition green , still in service today (but rare, and expensive--all wool) which was also "adapted" from another service (USMC).

Besides, they look really cool with the brown leather flight jacket!

Only an airdale would think that. The real work goes on in the enginerooms. No need for a panzy azzed brown fury jacket the light weights need to protect themselfs from the way too harsh elements real sailors experience down in the hole.

Only a snipe would think being locked in a hot , sweltering dungeon , not to see the light of day for months on end, was the "real Navy". They think that they are the brains behind the operation , when in reality thay are 21st century galley slaves.

I love it! Got me ta smiling even before I had my lifer juice this morning. It does bring up a line from the Ten Commandments with Charleston Heston though. When he is an oarsman on the galley, one of the guys with a whip tells them, "We keep you alive to serve this ship". I figure that guy was related to one of the first Chiefs I worked for.
