How was General Marshal as a commander?

As a high-end strategist, he was the best.

How he would have fared at a lower level is irrelevant. It was not his job. He won the war.

He was excellent in the role he filled. His credentials as a field commander are hard to judge..., but his continued push to create an "airhead" in support of the Normandy landings by dropping US Airborne Divisions inland far beyond the possibility of any overland support makes him seem questionable in that role.

I don't think he ever had "field command". But apparently he was excellent planner and operations officer in WW I and also brilliant administrator. His judgment about choosing some of subordinaties for their positions was bit poor time to time, though.

Case in point, "The Marshall Plan".

Amusing anecdote: Marshall panned on the idea of being a field marshall as he didn't want to be called "Field Marshall Marshall".
