Sounds like a bug.  Please post a save the turn before it happened to the tech support forum.

It may have just been fixed.  There was a bug where one of the air routines was getting confused about what year it was.  It was just fixed and will be in the next patch.  This might be a different, but similar bug.

Maybe just the pilot got carried away with it all...  After all the Hornet was certainly rammed at the Battle of Santa Cruz in Oct '42 by a Kate pilot that according to eye-witnesses got too intoxicated with glory and decided to take out the carrier in his own personal fashion (althuogh other people have reported he never dropped his torpedo, so he could have had a hang-up and decided this was the only way to hit the carrier.  Most eyewitnesses agree that his Kate didn't appear to have been damaged by AA fire)
