I haven't started a serious game of version 1.40 yet due to conflicts with "real life", but today I had a chance to try it out, and decided to go later into the campaign by starting scenario 13.

Wow... the Allies have a lot of resources! It's almost overwhelming to try to figure out what is an efficient strategy. So I just left a lot of things "sitting around" to see what happens. First off, the Japanese AI sends a lot of planes off in the first day or two, but doesn't get many back. I don't know what I'd do in its shoes either - the Allied airpower is impressive compared to mid-42 game starts.

Next, it turns out that the AI will ignore ships in port, so I could leave all the ships in Lunga, Talugi and Gili-Gili sitting there without a care. I really doubt a human player would let me do that.

I think other people have mentioned this, but when I left my planes on "Naval Attack" with "Airbase Attack" as the secondary target, they never sortied. But once I changed their mission to "Airbase Attack" and set targets, they went off like jack-the-bear, and afterwards even started to fly on their own accord once I reset Naval Attack missions.

BTW - I left the bombers at 6000 feet and they did some pretty good damage on several transport TFs that wandered too close - this "feels" a lot different than the results in earlier versions. Is this simply a factor of "experience" or "commanders", or has the bombing routine been tweaked again.

I also tried the bit about putting all my bombers in Lunga on "ASW" at 1000 feet and they sure took care of the subs quickly. Before I did that I send a number of destroyer squadrens out after the subs but surprisingly got no contacts.

BTW - I couldn't get battleships based and fueled at Lunga to bombard Munda, but they would bombard the next base over to the north. And each time they did, the shore batteries got some hits on them.

The other thing that struck me about this scenario is how much supply is used by those forward bases. I had to set up huge convoys to keep the supplies going.

So while I'm not certain when I'll have the time to set up a full start for scenario 13, it is certainly interesting to look at. So if anyone has any experiences, observations or suggestions on this scenario, I would sure like to hear them.

Thanks -

Dave Baranyi
