Hi-v1106b, 5/1/43, Allies. Situation: Allies hold Guam, Rota and Tinian. Ready to go for Saipan.

Problem-During the invasions of Guam and Tinian my Amphib AKs and APs took a fearful beating, with several sunk. How to knock out CDs at Saipan before landings?

I've tried air strikes against the ports and SC bombardments, with minimal results in both cases. Do strikes against enemy ground forces do better?

Suggestionss, please.

Thanks, Hugh Browne

Put CAs in your landing TFs. They will draw CD fire and protect the transports.

I had CA's and North Carolina in an amphibious TF landing the 4th Marine Division at Saipan, after weeks of LBA pounded the base from Guam and Rota (I have bypassed Tinian), plus bombardment TF's of half a dozen old BB's hitting the island as well.

The cruisers and BB helped, but not by much.  The CD guns still shot up the transports, but I'd get the "North Carolina moving to engage CD guns" message only after the transports were hit.  The resupply TF's got shot up even worse since I had CL's escorting them, and their 6" guns weren't big enough to take on the 170mm and 203mm guns in Saipan Fortress.  Those big guns were in operation and shelling my transports the day the Marines took the base, about 3 days after the landing.

Prolonged, sustained Port attack seems to be the consensus choice for disabling CD guns.  There is no good second choice if the first choice is not possible.

Let me add to what Mike says with continous bombing on port attack. Heavy bombers doing constant port attacks for an extended period of time. A full month would not be overkill.

Also put LCI(R) and (G) into the amphib force as thet will engage the shore batteries on the way in too.
