For those who havn't yet had to pleasure of visiting Oahu and Pearl Harbor in person, I thought he or she might be interested in some recent photos of the island paradise.

This is the view from the top of Diamond Head crater. In the forground is Waikiki and Honolulu. To the right you can just make out an old abandoned observation post. The US army built a fort within the crater that featured a three tiered fire control platform built into the cliff face. We are standing on top of the structure.

Getting to the top of the crater is a rather long climb that features several hundred stairs at a couple points. Here's the big one.....

Here's another view that gives a better impression of the steepness of the stairs in a 2D photo. Note the person with the backpack contemplating this little jaunt after an already taxing hike. He's from outer-space. hint hint

This is a view of the inside of the crater as seen from a winching station, the metal bars you can just make out to the right. This station is on the same level as the base of the long stairs after you exit the tunnel....about 2/3 up the crater. To the right forground are the storage bunkers for the fort...still in use by the Army. We biked up to it having missed the no trespassing signs......fortunately noone arrested us.

Same location, looking towards north side of crater. Center-forground shows the visitor center and the access road and entrance tunnel that is the only easy means into the crater. (unless your a mountain goat)

View of Number 3 barbette as seen from the memorial. I am standing right in front of where the ship's mainmast stub is located, looking towards the stern.

View looking South from memorial looking towards Ford Island. In the background you can see the remains of the air control tower. In the forground is the bow concrete mooring pier where Arizona was tied on Dec 7th.

view of waters looking out over the Arizona on the bow (south) side of the memorial. To the right you can see the edge of the ship's hull just under the surface of the water.

View of stud-muffin and GF unit mark I. Behind us is the Arizona's stern. Far behind that you can make out the recently built land-bridge that now connects Ford Island to Oahu. Now one doesn't have to take boat over. Civilian access to the island is done by bus-trolley, all other traffic restricted to military personel.

Beefy!

We got lucky and scored a special tour of Pearl Habor by boat on this day, only offered a few times each year. As such, I got to get a close look at Pearl Harbor's often forgotten second memorial wreck, the USS Utah.

This is a view the ship's remains as seen from the boat. left of photo to right of photo = bow to stern. The ship was only partially rightened in similar fashion to USS Oklahoma. However due IIRC to the loose silt of the bottom, instead of righting completely the winches ended up dragging the ship closer to the shore, hence further attempts to righten the ship were abandoned.

Visible above the water is the ship's starboard side superstructure. To the right you can just make out the funnel remains.

View of the memorial structure for the Utah. Access to the memorial is still restricted and can only be accessed by appointment.

In the forground you can just make out the starboard edge of the hull forward of the superstructure and approximately flush with where barbette #2 would be.

View looking from the stern-ward angle. To the right you can make out a foundation of a small AA gun mount, installed during the ship's time as a training ship/target ship.
