In the database viewer, whet do the "filter by..." and the class labels mean in the upper left corner?

Does the game recognize ship classes in any way?

Sure does. Start typing in the empty text box next to class. You can filter/search that way.

It looks like there are individual ships...I guess I was wondering if all ships are individual or classes.

Classes but they are also broken down by year/subtype. They are generally named by their know class name or first ship in class. Sometimes you'll also notice notes after that help make better decision about what version should be used.
