My game versus Paul is in mid July 1942 and I'm playing the Allies. To this point in time I've suffered 3 incidents, 2 CAs kissed each other and the other 2 happenings were between AKs, APs and TKs. Is there a way of reducing the frequency of these events or am I just cursed by the die rolls?

For convoys, keep numbers small... but in realty its all about the numbers (dice numbers that is).

TF commander naval skill and naval skill of individual ship commanders also have impact.
Speed of TF - flank speed have bigger chance of collision comparing to cruise.

Don`t know if game using that variable but in bad weather (storm, mist, low moon) collision chance is should be also bigger

The larger the TF, the more likely it is to happen. I think the commander skill helps too, however, collisions will happen. There were quite a few during the war and if anything they are less common in the game.

The last almost full game I played against the AI I counted about 36 collisions in about 35 months of play. Most of them were in the second half of 42. GP

I sometimes keep notes on stuff.

Has anyone had a battleship blow up and sink for no particular reason a la HIJMS Mutsu? I suspect not since I suspect I would have seen some crying/attempts to garner an inordinate amount of sympathy about it in the Forums (Even if such occurrences were historically the number one reason for the loss of a battleship).

Not that I'm aware of, but people have had xAKs and such blow up and sink.

One or two patches ago, I had ACM vessels blow up so frequently that a posting to one must have been considered a suicide mission. I thought about seeing if I could put commanders in them that failed in a mission or lost a battle but I figured it was too much work.

I had a AMc impale itself on a reef at Babeldoab a few turns ago in our game, and a xAK blow up in port a few months back.

A couple of years ago . . . in a January 42 game turn . . . I had a light cruiser who had been undergoing repairs at Pearl Harbor blow up and sink. It was not that badly damaged (or no longer badly damaged). I attributed it to an undiscovered 400 kg bomb stuck in the mud in the harbor detonating beneath the ship.

If anything, ships collisions happen less often than they should. Browse over a master list of ships losses and you will see collisions leading to many cases of sinking and damaging.
Out of the 52 US submarine losses in WW2, four were due to grounding. Yet we never see that in game.

The only way collisions can occur is ships in TFs. We never see the effects of ships going in and out of ultra busy ports like Sydney, San Francisco, Mumbai and Tokyo.

So I am all for dialing the number of ships smashing into one another

I've had ships strike a uncharted rock, which is close enough.

Happen to me 2 or 3 times.

I had also E class ship exploding without reason

Stay out of cyclones and typhoons. I'm sure you know how to do that by watching the weather reports.

Also, if you limit your TFs to one ship each, you'll almost never have that happen.

Ever wonder why HIJMS KAGA didn't go on the Indian Ocean Operation. Her navigator was given appropriate accolades for determining where to amend the chart after discovering an uncharted rock towards the end of the DEI Campaign. Limited the ship to 18kts top speed IIRC until it was taken into the yard and repaired back in Japan.

Ships also hit friendly mines during the war. That never happens in game. Or at least I've never seen it.

It's supposed to happen if you drop mine out of base.

It happened in bases during the war. I recall reading about a US transport that hit a mine and almost blocked the harbor entrance at Numea.

And I wonder how many players would have keyboard smashing rage if they lost a sub to a circular running torpedo. The USN lost 2 or maybe 3 subs to their own torpedoes.

IRL ships can even hit *charted* rocks. Can't recall the ship's name but I have read about a British man-of-war colliding with a sub-surface rock pinnacle because the pencil line the navigator had drawn on the map with the projected course track was obscuring the obstacle - and the ship was dead on track. IIRC it happened during the Norway campaign.

EDIT: Did some research, found the ship http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Effingham_%28D98%29

On 18 May 1940 Effingham was lost while engaged on transport escort duties. Traveling at 23 knots, outside the Norwegian Leads to minimise the risk of air attack, she was only one hour away from her destination when she struck a large rock in the area of Bodø (Bliksvær), in the Faxsen Shoal, near Bodø (20 minutes from the destination), between Bliksvær and Terra islands. The rock was well known and marked on the ship's charts, but when the navigator had drawn the ship's passage onto the map, his pencil mark had obscured the obstacle directly in the ship's path. No one was killed in the wreck, which was destroyed with a torpedo from the accompanying destroyer HMS Matabele on 21 May after all her crucial papers and equipment had been removed.

The skipper will always claim that it was an "uncharted" rock.

I've seen people say it does, especially if it's like the next day or two after a port is captured and a minefield layed. Now if you're sowing minefields from the air there should be no way a friendly should go in there without risk.
