Link - The Picard Era for Shadows Beta 1

Shadows Beta 1 Summary

Races - 25 + 4 pirate races
Shipsets - Some races use a generic set (It is Star Trek after all). The final set is an optional 'extra' set. See below for instructions.
Characters - 244 images, over 1200 characters (some share a generic image)
Troop images - Almost complete
Dialogue - 12 races + 2 pirate races (orion dialogue not finished)
Flagshapes - 12 all major races have their own flags and colour schemes (sometimes the colours are faulty)
Music - 27 tracks from Star Trek The Next Generation's first 3 seasons composed by Ron Jones
System names - 581 Star Trek system names
Race files- Complete. May require tweaking, please report any issues
Bias settings - Complete. May require tweaking, please report any issues
Policy files - Complete. May require tweaking, please report any issues
Victory conditions - Complete. Please report any issues
Race Event types - Mostly complete. May require tweaking, please report any issues

Updates for Beta 1 :-

- Added Zalkonian Race
- Added Sheliak Race
- Replaced the old flagshapes with the new png files for Shadows
- Added 4 pirate factions. Use the total conversion patch to replace names
- Added troop images for 21 races (some are subject to change (especially the Sheliak))

Recommended Total Conversion (included in the download)

This replaces the base game's files such as sound effects, images and the galactopedia files. Make backups of your original files.

I've included this in the download for the mod as a separate zip file. I'd recommend using it as it adds a whole of Trek to the mod.

- The Crystalline Entity (replaces silvermist)
- Pirates names, Ferengi Renegades, House of Korgath, Orion Syndicate, The Maquis
- Resource images, names and galactopedia entries (Starfleet ships actually run on Deuterium now)
- Some weapon effect replacements
- Message pop ups appear as Starfleet PADDs
- Glorious Star Trek sound effects

1.0.3 update 10/02/2014

- Replaces the pirate names
- update to the gametext file for the latest version of shadows v1.9.0.13
- Removed the planet images so as to reduce the filesize
- Replaced Assault pods with transporter sound effects. The image is also replaced with something non visible

Installation of the Picard Era Mod:-

1. Unzip
2. Copy the folder 'Star Trek Picard Era' to Matrix Games/Distant Worlds/Customization/
3. Run the game and select 'Change Theme' from the main menu then select the Star Trek mod and click 'Switch Theme'
4. Before starting a new game, make sure to deselect 'Enable Return of the Shakturi story Events' from the game setup screen, like so:-

Installation of the Total Conversion mod:-

1. Make a backup of all the files to be replaced. I recommend backing up your entire images, help and sounds folder. Don't forget the gametext.txt file as well.
2. Unzip the contents of the Picard Era Total Conversion zip file into your Distant Worlds directory, replacing the original files.

Helpful tips for setting up your game

When selecting one of the coloured flags for your empire, set the secondary colour as white, so that the different colours aren't diluted. See fig1

If you have the time, you can add each empire to the other empire setup screen. Type the name of the empire and press the down arrow on your keyboard to jump to the below text box. You're going to spend alot of time in your game, might as well set it up right.Scroll down to find fig2, with a list of all empire names. See fig2

**under construction**

How to use the 'Extra' Shipset :-

This shipset is not used by any one race in the game. It's purpose is simply to provide extra ship images for any additional ship designs the player may need. The player can now have 2 frigate designs etc.

- From the Design Screen, click 'Copy as new' or 'Add New'.
- Name your new design.
- Click on the ship image box. Scroll to the bottom and look for a suitable ship image. There are several images here from different races. There are more ship images for Federation designs than any other race.
- Now design your new ship with it's unique features. I find that naming my ship designs according to what role they have helps. For example, I could have an Escort Frigate that is fast and lightly armed, as well as an Assault Frigate, which is a bit slower but armed to the teeth.

That's something I've been struggling with. I would very much appreciate if you could make me a couple of .png's, maybe a troop pic also would be awesome.

Here's what i'm using just now. It's not quite got the menacing 'we are a galactic super power' feel to it.

The ships look great!  But yes, a new race picture is needed.  I'm sure there must be a picture of some Romulan commander on the bridge somewhere out there on the internet.  Would it be wise to consider combining some of the trek mods together so we can get more than one race in a theme?  I notice the Federation are already on here.

Also, has anyone considered doing Cardassian or Borg?

I will continue to work on Star Trek races. The reason I didn't do a Federation set is for the reason there are actually already 2 out there. Confilctx (come back!!) and the very talented drillerman.

I will do a Klingon set next and then probably work on some smaller races (tholian, gorn, sheliak).

I don't know how the Borg would fit into Distant Worlds. I rather think of them as a distant race who only attacks occasionally but wreaks havoc when they do. Also Borg don't trade lorros fruit or engage in diplomacy for that matter!

I still think the Borg would be a fantastic race to have in the game though, I know the trading etc is a little out of context but we can make them an extremely aggressive race.  As for the Klingons, I notice the Haakonish attack a LOT without declaring war first, this kind of raiding would fit great into a Klingon personality I think.

From the Episode Balance of terror you get a nice look at mark Leonard as a Romulan commander. If you go the next generation route they tend to look like over painted caricatures of OS Trek Romulans.I used to think that female Romulan commander from "The Enterprise incident" was hot.Seeing her again i still do...

I might get around to it eventually or I'm sure someone else will.

Thanks for that info, that's the sort of thing that can certainly improve a mod.

All my ships are TNG or Nemesis era so I should really remain consistant.

That's precisely what I'm struggling with. I can't find any pics that I like!

I would prefer TNG era and obviously one where they are looking at the camera as if it were a view screen.

I'll have a good look tonight after work.

The base is very nice, any chance you can find an old style Romulan warbird to use as one of the ships? Escort or troop transport?

You'll find a few additional ships included, one of which is an old Bird of Prey. I've tried to keep things TNG era for now and using my own preference. For example, I've set the Warbird (the most impressive Star Trek warship ever) as a capital ship whereas the valdore warbird (a nice design in its own right) as a cruiser.

Thanks but, I've seen that one. Too much face and he looks a little bewildered.

What do you all think of my troop image?

Good Troop image!

in regards to a Romulan leader from the TNG era......look at "Tomalock" played by Andreas Katsulis....he played G'Kar on B5 as well.He actually pulled off a Romulan commander to my mind.

Legend. Yes he's my favourite Romulan. I think he was in it right from the 1st/2nd season and of course he was in the finale.

I'm trying to be as accurate as possible. Star Trek ships use Impulse engines to move at sublight speeds. Here's a good science explanation from wikipedia:

"It is a form of magnetohydrodynamic or magnetoplasmadynamic thruster. This is used in conjunction with the ship's warp drive's alteration of the ships relativistic mass, to achieve mid-to-high sub-light speeds. Thrusters, on the other hand, are closer to the designs of a high-efficiency reactant propellant (i.e. a sophisticated rocket engine) and are usually used for high-precision maneuvers."

In other words, Impulse engies are better than rocket engines.

Version 1.1 released

I changed the name of the mod to TRSE Star Trek Mod since now it includes not only The Romulan Star Empire but also The Klingon Empire too. Didn't make sense leaving the way it was.

The Borg could replace Space Slugs or Kaltors one day?
These ships really look beatiful!

Thank you for your creativity !

Thanks, Bartje. That's a great idea, though I'd rather the borg be more of a threat than just a wee beastie. If we could mod the stats of the kaltors and other monsters then it would work really well. Or, I could just use a small borg scout vessel, a ship that isn't very powerful, but I think we all want to see a borg cube at some point.

As for my creativity, thank you, but I think it's important for me to stress that I didn't draw any of these. They were modelled by a very talented bunch of people around the internet, then their work was uploaded onto battleclinic. All I did was take the 3d model, rotate it to a top-down view and copy the image. Some colours were changed to balance things and running lights were added.

The hardest part is finding race and troop images. Also writing the dialog is a bit of a pain.

If anyone could help me find race images, that would save me alot of time. I'm looking for consistency, so there are some criteria to follow.

- Image must be TNG era or at least look like it could be (the klingons look the same TMP or TNG)
- Character must be looking at the camera or just to the side (I can edit the direction of the eyes)
- Heads and shoulders must be in frame

I know this is a tough ask, but if anyone can help with this it would be a great help.

Version 1.2 released. This is starting to feel like star trek now. I strongly recommend installing the flagshapes, not only was a bit of a nuisance making them, but they greatly add to the experience.

Enjoy folks!
