Hi,

So this is a game mechanism question. There is this place that I want to bombard but I know its protected by quite a lot of mines. What do I need to do to protect my bombarding fleet from the mines?

Do adding mine sweeping ships to the task force help?
Should I sweep it before I go in?
Or set a mine sweeping task force to follow?
Have a large minimum range for bombardment?

Basically, what are the options, what works?

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure about whether range makes a difference. Given this game's complexity, it probably is.

You can try to add a DMS or six to the bombardment force. I think they are supposed to sweep going in. I've never seen indications of them sweeping, but I've never hit a mine either.

I do not think a MSW tf following will do anything.

Sweeping before going in is an option but if there are any Coast Defense batteries present, the crews on the minesweepers will be unable to buy any life insurance and you'll find yourself short of MSW hulls.

Best option would be to build or take an airbase that is close enough for your bombers to hit the target.

I've heard this helps, but keep in mind that after about 2/3rds the the max range results flop.

Playing as Japan I've done this at Balikpapan with just about every DMS I could scrape up. Ouch, 1-2 sunk, bunches in the scratch and dent bin, and a few of what the h**l was that. The shore battery I believe has 75's. Oh yeah, I just remembered I tried it once against Singers. I was not pretty.

To be honest, there isn't a good way to sweep and bombard at the same time.
The minesweeper will be wrecked, no matter what and to have them embedded in a bombardment TF doesn't really protect your big guys.
Also, at least for Japan, DMSs are slow and they tend to slow down the whole TF, thus exposing it more to counterbattery fire.
Anyway, the best way, imho, is to have the minefields well detected first, so if the target is really important, is probably better to send some suicide minesweeping TFs first and then a bombardment TF.

Obviously avoid places like Singapore or Bataan whatever it takes

As Allies, my opponent was surprised when I send in my old, slow American BBs to bombard Rabaul with hundreds of mines. When you suspect mines, first thing to do is set Escorts to "Do Not Bombard." Second, for me was having them at over 15k in range. Between this and over 200 B-24s, the base was closed in one day.

Against Balikpapan or equivalent, meaning few light coastal guns, I had good results sending as many minesweepers as I could (more than a dozen)....

I don't know if it was luck, but the damage received was "spreaded" among all minesweepers instead of focused on few. Thereby, I got very few sunk; with most of them capable to reach Tarakan for critical repairs (I had a AR waiting there), before full repair at Saigon.

If I remember correctly, I didn't lose more than a couple and I also noticed that because they are "small", repair time is relatively quick; with most of them back in service after a month or so

Often, I'll just bite the bullet & send an MSW TF in ahead of the BombTF, expecting heavy losses. The USN has plenty of AMs, & I'd rather lose a dozen of them than risk hvy damage to a BB or loaded APA.
