I would like some opinions on the strategies employed with basing fighter units at forward bases. As an example, do you bring your longest range fighter, e.g. P-38, to the most forward base, or do you prefer to move your short range fighters up and keep the others back. Would you move a P-38 unit to Munda or a P-40 or Corsair unit up and keep the '38 back? Somewhat of a quandry.Thx.

That's really dependant on what you are using them for :D

If you want LRCAP, put your longest up front as to them it is a shorter range.

You also need to look at what bombers you are using them to escort ... no point using fighters that can not reach the target yet bombers that can.

Are they purely for CAP purposes (no escort duties?)

Are you getting replacements for this type of aircraft currently? Not much point basing a group up front (maximum loss area) if you are not getting any replacements of that type.

All of these need to be factored in, coupled with one important other point... is there a base close enough to withdraw to that can still support and fly them? If not, you will loose them if pushed back.

Remember the goal of the Allied player. That is to deny victory to Japan. No need to rush, you should creep forward base by base, using your superior engineers to maximize each and every step of the way until Japan falls under your might.

I keep my P-38s back as escorts for my heavies. The are too valuable to risk in situations a short range fighter will do the job. With proper rest and high morale, even P-39s stand up well against zeroes when the are escorting Betties.

Thx for the replies. I'm using a strategy which combines the elements which you both mentioned. I'll continue to experiment.
