Would a carrier be able to conduct flight ops during an underway replenishment? I have no idea.

I tried this in Command and there were no issues with launching and recovering aircraft. I'm wondering if this is realistic or not.

I would imagine that helicopter ops would be possible, but I'm not sure about fixed wing.

Thoughts?

Seems that all activity is on hangar deck, so I don't see any problem launching/recovering aircraft while doing that.

Doubt they do fixed wing but also sure this is not that big of a deal

Theoretically, it is possible, although with some caveats (wind across the deck/aircraft loads, etc). In practice, I don't recall ever having done it with fixed wing aircraft.

I have never seen flight ops during Underway replenishment, with the exception of Helos of course. Fixed wing would interfere with the helo operations, not to mention taking part of the flight deck that would be used for landing of helicopter delivered cargo.

We would unrep from the carriers quite frequently and I never saw any fixed wing activity, just Helicopters, and little of those as well. Most of the time the smaller ships when doing unrep from a carrier are just filling up on fuel. We usually had a dedicated auxiliary ship that we resupplied food, spare parts and other essentials from plus fuels as well if needed. This was part of our CAG at the time, though I understand that a CAG was larger in the 1980's than they are now.

Thanks guys this is consistent to what we though. In general though the game impact of this is pretty low so it won't be addressed for some time.

Thanks!

Mike

Glad to be of help. Offering up personal experience of my time in service is the least I can do to help those out who work so hard to produce such a fine simulation.

I see supply ships like AOE's in many scenarios. But I don't use them because rarely do the scenario authors load the ships magazines with the ammo used by my combat ships and planes. So, I play with unlimited a/c ammo.

In some scenarios, I noticed that AAA guns run out of ammo. I discoverd that if they are part of a group with an ammo facility and the facility has the correct ammo for the gun in it magazine, then it will automatically reload the guns; or even sam sites with group if its magazine contains the correct weapon record. Sometimes, I add the proper weapon records to ammo facilities in a scenario for both sides or the obvious defender.

In my experience scenario authors do fine at loading mags. If they did miss something I'd suggest being a good guy and consider emailing or pm them.

Thanks

Mike

I was in a Hornet squadron (VFA_81) back in the mid-90's, did two Med cruises on the USS Saratoga.
UNREP days always meant at least a few hours off from flight ops for us: the fantail of the flight deck was always fouled with stores and whirly-birds.

Follow-up question for those with operational experience: how would this be handled in wartime? Would the carrier position itself in a "safe" location (friendly air cover?) for the UNREP? Would you even UNREP within range of enemy action?

This is mostly for my own education, but I have pondered making a scenario where UNREP plays a central role.

I can't find the source right now, but I recall reading that the in a hypothetical WWIII situation, a US carrier in the Norwegian Sea was expected to need to disengage to UNREP within a week.

they want to double UNREP capacity with CVN 78

also there are other methods of delivery:

VERTREP

CONREP

Question: is munitions UNREP-ing currently modelled? It does happen, but unless I'm doing something wrong, it happens way to fast. For example, re-loading VLS tubes shouldn't take seconds. I just added the right weapon record to a ship with replenishment capability, and then ordered ship needing replenishing to UNREP.
