Playing as Axis in Italy campaign 43-45.

Is it me or is it normal for the LW to be destroyed on the ground in a matter of a few turns.

eg. Allies land on the heel of italy.
Italian AF has surrendered. All LW forces moved far north and put in luftflotte reich.

To test allies I send down JG53 down to AF NE of Rome and put them under II Fleiger Korps.I adjust settings for that Group for Interception only ie cancell all options.

In just 2 turns the JG53 has gone from 100 odd planes to 10.

What am I doing wrong. Or do I just relocate ALL air units to northern map edge and forget about them???? Please help.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The safest way to protect your airforce is to disperse it. Don't put multiple squadrons on one airfield. Keep them out of reach of allied fighters. Disperse your squadrons over a wide area so they cant all be hit in one big Ground Attack mission.

Try and conserve it. Don't waste it trying to save Sardinia or some other useless gesture. Save it for something worthwhile because once you start using it, it's gonna disappear fast.

agree, I'll destroyed over 1000 planes in my current PBEM with air base bombing but took a lot of losses myself.

I think the solution for the Germans is fairly easy, spread out, not too many units at a given base. That means the allies will need to invest heavily in recon and set up fairly broad bomber boxes (which in turn means less sustained damage at a particular base)

There's a trick to keeping his head down and not coming for your bases. As soon as he lands somewhere start recon flights over his airfields. As soon as you see planes on his fields, bomb them. I've destroyed over 1900 WA planes on the ground before in a 5 turn span. The first turn they move to those new bases they have no air support, especially if they are on auto, so no intercepts or flights. Keep killing the airbases until you start to run low on bombers and then disperse till the next invasion. I've seen too many people get so twitchy about getting airplanes on their new invasion air bases that they forget the LW has 1300 bombers to use against the 5 new airfields you put down.

The way to avoid this is to set those bases on the turn taken to 100 TOE and priority 4. This puts all the stuff needed to fly from those bases, and just set them to no missions and eventually they will tear the bombers up. That's when you stop bombing and disperse till next time.

Thx for replies.
I still think that its far too easy to annihilate the LW on the ground. Its not muvch fun as axis and the work around is rather gamey.
I plead to the game designers to throttle back the AI for airbase raids,

Destroying Axis planes does not get you much. Killing Axis pilots does. The Axis never really run short of machines but once you get well into 1944 the pilot quality becomes so bad that you can brush the LW aside.

That's basically true for Fighters and FBs. However, the LW will run out of bombers, particularly since all bomber production halts in August of 1944. Not that it matters too much at that point....

Also, destroying aircraft temporarily lessens the missions flown and so eases concerns on NI and ground support. Long term you need to kill them in the air to strangle the pilot flow, but locally (especially around invasions, you need to stop them flying missions over your beaches. That's when airfields should be attacked.

I have not played a human yet (waiting until the patch flow dries a little. There is something else as well... now what was it? Oh I know, I am also waiting until I am some good at the game vs AI :)

with the sort of 'mob the invasion with 1000 bombers tactics, I would have thought the solution was:
1. Land
2. Ensure some airfields are 4 supply priority, with supply then fly fighters in (maybe 1 US Group/3 RAF Sqds per field. Make sure yu fly them in from close by so they have miles left.
3. Make sure they dont get ADs, so they are available for intercepts
4. Establish air superiority over the beach with your beach air force. Meanwhile recce and bomb any occupied Ge airfield. Use only offshore bombers and escorts. Once you have reasonably superiority, then move FB and LB on shore to ease the supression tasks etc.

Doesn't this protect your air forces whilst dealing with the LW and supporting your troops/ships? In the right invasion you actually want airfield to bomb!
