just saw this in the news

This is quite a detailed and fascinating article -very interesting that CMANO can be used in this way to test some of the advantages of the F-35

In my experience the F35 can destroy air defense targets with glide bombs or long range missiles before it's detected. The weapons are detected though.

Yep. In "Bass Drum" I attacked an airport protected by SAM sites succesully with the 6 F-35s and their JSOWs. They were detected after release by a ground based IR missile system but the missiles missed. One can definitely see the benefit of low observability in this game. Tryed attacking the same installation before with F-18s armed with AARM/hARMs and JDAMs and it was tough. Lost 3 F-18s out of about 12

It's really all about the intel. If you know where the launchers are, including Pantsirs, you can defeat them with SDBs. The F35 can find this stuff from far off, it's really fascinating. Even VHF radars can't see the F35 before it's too late.

A tip for everybody: always use the the B variant of the JSOW to attack soft targets like SAM sites. This is a cluster ammunition weapon and it will almost always destroy the ENTIRE SAM site with a single hit...

Trying the same with the A model or other single warhead weapons takes MUCH more ordnance.

True. Another aspect is that each aircraft can carry more SDBs than JSOWs, so SDBs can absorb more defensive fire. I think single weapons prioritize the radars before the launchers. Actually I have used both SDB and JSOW at the same time with good success against 2014 Russian S-300s and with a squad of Pantsirs in the direction of the attack. With a 4 ship F35 attack. Maybe someone can confirm.

Just to clarify, the A model of the JSOW is the combined effects cluster warhead. The canceled B model was intended to be anti-armor. The C is the unitary.
