Newest beta scenario for testing...

It's 1965 and the Soviet Union has transformed Tanzania into an "African Cuba." The United States sends a carrier group to eliminate this threat to world peace and world stability. How much gear do the Tanzanians have? Will the Soviets get involved?

As always, I'm interested in feedback, comments, observations, etc. How well do the various Events (including two weather changes and, depending on circumstances, an authorization to use nuclear weapons) work? Are there any bugs that need to be fixed? How is the gameplay? Is the scenario fun, challenging, and plausible enough that people can suspend their disbelief? What can I do to make the scenario better?

Thanks!

Anyone finished this one yet? How is it working? Does anything need to be fixed or changed? Thanks.

Played it a bit and still quite early. Those AIM-9Cs are junk. I had Crusaders on a closing stern line of a straight and level MiG-19 going under 500kts, same altitude and the seeker saw nothing. Guns got the kill while the AIM-9C was still complaining of not seeing the target. Not sure why Tanzania is sending MiG-19s over 250nm out over the ocean chasing bogeys at night in isolated pairs. May want to restrict their hunting grounds? Otherwise it's a fun challenge as always, Mark.

AIM-9C is not infrared guided (and obviusly "the seeker saw nothing"), is a very rare short range semi-active radar homing missile (and also almost useless in the real life). Probably do you need to iluminate the target with the Crusader radar.
The idea was copied by the Soviets also in a K-13 Atoll derivative, the K-13R, also a real life failure.

New version uploaded with a few tweaks. Gave all the Crusaders AIM-9Bs to start with and reduced the amount of AIM-9Cs on the ship...there are some left if you run out of the Bs, but you don't have to rely on them so much now. Modified the Tanzanian patrols a bit, too...they should be a bit harder to beat now.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Of course. The radars were on but still no joy. An SARH should get some sort of glimmer inside guns range...

New version uploaded keeping AlexGGGG's comments in mind. What I did was to assume Hancock had experienced a fire on her flight deck a few days ago (are the comments in the orders clear on this...and phrased the way they would have been under the circumstances?). As a result, about twenty of her A/C are in maintenance, including some of the Crusaders and half of the E-1s. (I didn't want to do more than that because I figured if the carrier had really been crippled, the mission would have been scrapped until another carrier could be sent.) This should be enough to even the odds a bit.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Maybe adding one more Soviet sub to keep player occupied with ASW too? Though then you might need additional ASW assets..like proper helicopters...

Any additional thoughts or observations on this one? Or is it ready for the Community Scenario Pack? Did reducing the number of available aircraft make the scenario a better balance/more challenging/more fun? Thanks!

Just got to the update with this one. Lots of fun, Mark! Had to shoot down a pair of Sov Fishbeds early, as they decided to overfly my CVBG (no!). Just finishing an exciting RF-8 run over Dares Salaam and planning the first strike of the morning. Lost a Spad to AAA off the Sov picket destroyer but sank it. Just starting to pick up the Sov convoy, too.

Other than a few application hiccups (see Tech Support threads) this one is a winner, IMHO. Resources are taut, challenges are interesting. Just starting my attacks on the airfields now but was able to run a RF-8 over Dares Salaam without any corresponding SAM fire. Also seems like Tanzanian a/c are not paired up, they come at me in disordered singles quite often. Great to play the Crusader - tons of guns kills!

Here's a screenshot just after my third air-to-air loss. The MiG-19s have been deadly in close-in, nose-on AA-1A shots. No warning and not a bad ph% at all for the era. You can see Checkmate 10 circling around to get on the now-dead MiG's tail. Both downed aircraft had been located near the origin of the still-intact course line.

I took a high-deflection cannon shot with Checkmate 8 seconds seconds before the AA-1 hit. Both the MiG and Crusader went down in flames, a mutual kill. This was my carrier air wing's 30th aerial kill in a little over a day.

Just concluding my air strike on Zanzibar when the mission ended. Hit the SA-2 site hard with some great Bullpup shooting, too! Final tally on Tanzanian MiG-19s post-strike is 30.
