Hi gents,

I have a question about HOW the AI works concerning missile evasion. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong. I'd just like a BRIEF explanation as to why something like below would happen:

I have a four-plane flight of F-15Is coming into the attack area. The SEAD A/C have already taken care of the known high-altitude shooters. The only thing left is the SA-15, which has a ceiling of 23,000 ft (IIRC). In any case, my planes are flying at 36,000 feet, and the terrain is only 5,000 ft, so the F-15Is should be go to go for their attack.

Suddenly, an unaccounted SA-11 pops up. The SA-11 has a high ceiling and is an obvious threat to the F-15I. The SA-11 lies directly in the path of the F-15I and is only a few miles away. The SA-11 fires on the F-15Is, as it should, and even scores a few hits. The F-15Is began making their normal turns, etc., in an effort to avoid the SA-11 missiles. (Now, whenever a I-Hawk fires at the F-15Is from a distance, the F-15Is maintain the same altitude. I fully expected that to occur here, as well.)

Instead, for some unknown reason, the F-15Is were suddenly observed at 20,000 feet, while trying to evade the SA-11 missiles. Ok, here comes the issue. By diving down to 20,000 feet, now the F-15Is were in ceiling range of the SA-15s, which now started shooting at the F-15Is, as well.

So, the question is, has something changed? Why would they dive down into harms way so the more SAMs could shoot at them. They already had their hands full with the SA-11s. Is this the way that it has always been? Did it occur because the F-15Is were so close to the SA-11? A brief explanation about this would be very helpful.

Hopefully I explained everything in an organized, and detailed manner.

BTW, everything works perfect. Thanks for fixing the I-Talds.

Thanks so much for all of your efforts.

Doug

Hmmm don't think there is anything in the evasive maneouver logics that cause altitude changes. So was likely something else, but is impossible to tell without a good savegame.

Ragnar,

I've actually seen this a couple of times (rarely) in the past, so I don't really believe that it is anything new. I've always thought that it had something to do with evasion, like dives in altitude would increase air speed, but from what you are saying that is not the case.

Now that I know that it isn't "designed" as an evasion method, I will save the game the next time that it does it, and attach it.

Thanks again for everything.

Doug

I have noticed that a few times in B809 when the SAM hit the group leader, the rest of the group then descended to a few hundred feet.

You can see the described behaviour in the attached test scenario.

I knew that I wasn't crazy. Well, maybe I am crazy, but I knew that there was something "not quite right" with that behavior.

Thanks Gizzmoe for coming through with an example.

As usual, a savegame, screenshots and a good description helped solve the issue

Thanks again guys!
