Status: offline 		Sleepless in Istanbul, I ran into this 3 episode movie/series in youtube. It's like a grand tour of Europe in a funny way by a Pole who thinks - well the title gives it away - he started the WW2.

Status: offline 		You may find it amusing, but as a Pole, I don't think I have seen this film in its entirety in my whole life. Its running time is almost 4 hours and I always saw bits and pieces of this film, but not the full film. Also, I have always been bemused by the fact that the film producers in 1960s could treat the subject matter so lightly. All my family histories of WWII were grim, sort of hell-on-earth event, closer to what Klimov depicted in "Come and See". Even Polish TV series like "Kapitan Kloss", "Polskie drogi" or "Kolumbowie rocznik 20" had a somber tone, which fit more with what I heard about WWII from my Grandparents.

Status: offline 		Yaab, just wondering, your English is nearly flawless and your spelling is flawless, or at least better than many US/UK on the forum. How did you learn it? You can capitalize Grandparents if you like, since they're yours. I read the NYT and the local rag daily and wonder what in the world has happened to the editors since I was young? Grammar errors and just plain syntax errors. Mixing tenses in a single sentence. Stupid stuff. When to use plurals. Of course I use conversational English on the forum, not what I would write in a paper.

Well, my parents encouraged me to learn English when I was very young. Started learning the basics in primary school, then secondary school. Since I knew no native users of English, I used my knowledge to read English texts - comic books, magazines, books and whatnot. I make preposition mistakes and mess tenses sometimes, and I guess my mistakes fossilized of sorts, so there is no point in correcting them now.

Now, if you go to the GG's War in the East forum, there is that Polish guy called Morvael who became a patch tester some time ago. Now, this guy's English is flawess! He writes like a native user of English.

As for the general drop in the quality of written word, I guess we have a shorter attention span due to an overall media saturation. I have some Polish editions of some X-Men comics from 1970's and I am always astonished how wordy they were. So much text! Pick up the new ones and there is so little to read, but page composition, coloring, and anatomy are much more refined now. The march to 3D continues everywhere. You can't fight it. As Max Keiser once put it: "It is Godzilla versus Bambi".

BTW, the Grammarly plugin worked wonders for quality of this message!

In a wierd way a similar reaction.

Australia fought in the Western Desert & for a short time in Greece & Crete, our enemy was, in the main, managed by Rommel and was devoid of contact with either the SS or Gestapo and the war was hard fought but "clean".

We are quite happy to laugh at Movies/TV shows such as Hogans Heroes or 'Allo "Allo.

Our war against the japanese was totally different, after Singapore/Rabaul few prisoners were taken on either side, the list of atrocities against POW taken at Singapore well known.

There will never be any comedy programs based on our War in the Pacific. (Somehow McHales Navy squeezes through, but the comedy was aimed at the establishment, not the enemy)

When I was going to university I roomed at the house of a former Russian Soldier and his German wife. He had the audacity to get himself captured by the Germans in 1942 rather than fighting to the death. After years of horrible mistreatment and near starvation at the hands of the Germans (who kept him alive only because he had skill as an electric motor coil winder) he was liberated but knew that if he went back to the good 'ol USSR he would be shot for "desertion".
He fled west and ended up several years later in Canada. He had diabetes which may have had something to do with his incarceration.

"Allo, allo" was aired on the Polish television in 1990s. To me it was a cognitive dissonance. Was the occupation of France really that different compared to that of Poland? How can you make fun of this terrible war? It really ran contrary to everything I had learnt about WWII until then. Pretty confusing stuff.
