Had a strange thing happen in a battle where there was an air assault on a carrier fleet. This was in a classic scenario. The battle proceeded normally with kills and retreats on both sides, but then at the end of the battle all the attacking force's elements with a retreat status were killed, as if they belonged to a ground unit with no retreat route.

Any idea why this happened?

I think you should report this issue in the Bug/Support forum. Vic would be very interested i think.

Of course i am interested in any possible bugs. Always grateful for people reporting anything.

A save file if available would be appreciated. If so send to vic@vrdesigns.net

If not... just to clarify... you had a land based air force attacking an enemy carrier force , out on sea hex, right?

Best wishes,
Vic

Is there any chance that there was an over stacking at the attacking airbase?

Remember even Italian units count in a German hex for stacking. I have seen all artillery die rather than retreat when making an artillery attack from an over stacked hex.

It is possible for multiple nations to over stack in a hex, sadly.

The attacking air was a combination of land based and carrier air.

An additional bit of info: all the attacking units had a status of retreat.

Only time I have had retreating units eliminate on the attack was as already noted when they were in an over stacked hex.

In fact its functioning according to the rules. Its a scenario design flaw.

Pearl Harbour starts with 17 units and retreats are not allowed to hex that are overstacked (maximum is 16 units).

However I think this rule needs revision.

Next ATG version this rule will only apply to defenders.

Thanks for notifying me!

Best wishes,
Vic

It seems to me when the air units are out doing battle the base hex is no longer overstacked. The the air units should be allowed to return until the hex reaches reaches maximum number of units and then any additional returning units should be killed off instead of all of them.
