Guys,
If I send an air unit with damaged planes to national reserve do they all get there? Do they repair quicker than at an airbase - where some never seem to repair??

I play on the basis of yes planes do seem to get repaired faster in the national reserve. Given that morale of air groups not only goes up in reserve but gets a bonus when it is sent into reserve there is an incentive to continuously rotate your air groups in and out of reserve.

So damaged planes leave fields in Russia to the reserve fair enough - but cannot fly missions while on the airbase in Russia - yes?

Correct - damaged planes at an airbase (ie not in national reserve) can be lost to enemy overruns or bombing, and I think will cause the airbase to stock up on more fuel\supply\support in the logistics phase while drawing on its support, but cannot fly, go on missions or cause anything else in that turn. There seems to be no cost (eg fuel) sending air groups to reserve. In my play I usually start every turn sending air groups with lots of damaged planes, low morale or fatigued back to reserve and end every turn assigning air groups to airbases from the national reserve.

Telemecus, Thanks that sounds what I thought. I just wondered if planes could be lost on transfer - appears not, so thanks.

Glad I could help. To be conservative I would say far fewer planes would be damaged\ more get repaired going to reserve. This is particularly true if the airbase has low support and supply, so reducing the airbases load of air groups does seem to leave the airgroups that remain in better shape in the next turn. I have only seen hints of this in the manual and not stated explicitly so this is from impression gained during play. The way it seems damaged planes can magically get transported back to the national reserve, or indeed by air transfer to other airbases, without damage, fuel or vehicles does not match the physical reality. But I guess even in this game where so many intricacies are modelled some things for simplicity are ignored.

Your assumptions should be correct as its like that in AE in terms of units at a base etc. I think I have noticed the more there the less they repair.

It depends on aircraft type , for instance a german bomber wing with 2 groups and one staff section (84 ac) takes up the entire support squads to keep the ready aircraft flying .
put anything more than that and the damaged aircraft keep adding up .

however a german fighter wing with 5 groups and one staff section (204 ac) still has spare support squads , hence the aircraft get repaired quicker.

OK where can I see how many support squads are used by the units in the air base?

I guess the needed value = used. Should be the second one (the one after slash in AB detail).

ok thanks - I will check this out next turn - suspected something like this maybe the case - so best keep airbases at 100% toe as well.

Yes, for Germans keep them at 100% but for Axis minors its waste of manpower.

If you right click on the airbase counter then on the right hand side you will see its supply/fuel/ammo/support. This support=available. My experience is when the supply/support is very large you can even get 9 bomber groups there with no damage, when they are very low then on the next turn an airbase with even 1 fighter group will have a clutch of damaged planes. Moving air HQs to within range helps. The manual mentions they can lend support.
