Folks,

I came across a puzzling issue in relation to US/UK recce aircraft. I have a scenario where a RAF/US aircraft are flying recce sorties over Iraq in the 1960s. The weird thing is they cant detect targets on a clear day from high altitude, the first trucks and tanks I detected were only done so when I dropped the altitude to 12000 ft.

I threw in an RB57 and a U2 to see if they were any better but not really. So in effect high altitude recce aircraft cant detect targets from high altitude making them useless?

Have I messed up a setting somewhere or is this how the game logic is supposed to work?

Ive added a copy of the scenario if anyone wants to have a look for me, you need to switch to the UK side

Thank you in advance.

Butch

I had a game recently where a U2 flew right over a base with several AAA positions but didn't pick a thing up at 85k'. Yet you see Cuban Missile Crisis pics with 23mm and 37mm guns picked out no problem.

Doesn't the AC have to RTB and have the recon film developed? I doubt the pilot is going to able to see anything much smaller than a house from 85,000 ft. with his eyeballs.

So, the pilot could see the pictures from the cameras in real time in the 1960's?

OK, then if the pilot had no optical aids in cockpit how could anyone expect him to pick out individual tanks and AA guns from 16 miles up? Either I'm missing something or the game is working like it's supposed to. My understanding of the U2 in the early days was they would fly over a target zone and take a bunch of pictures (on film), then return to base where the photos were developed and analyzed by photo interpreters (specialists.)

I'd be glad to have some form of delayed intel mechanism. But as it stands all sensor data is revealed immediately.

I don't know about the modern U-2, but in it's early decades, yes. However, this isn't modeled in CMANO for obvious gameplay reasons. Though it would be a neat realism option to have.

If I recall, there was a scenario that sort of did this with Lua. A recee was flown over target, and when it landed, you got some sort of report. The recee plane was under control of the AI though and the side wasn't co-operative so it didn't report the sightings at the time.
I suppose you could 'share' contacts detected after landing with the player side thru Lua. Might be worthwhile to experiment with.

ground mobile units are notoriously hard to spot visually in Command, either by eyeball or other enhanced optics like FLIR or high res cams. I think this is to simulate ground masking and camouflage, however it doesn't apply to parked aircrafts, those will be spotted even at max altitude with an U2.

Yes, indeed it's difficult to spot small targets via a single pass at 85k feet.
However the game should simulate the process of completing the mission and processing the data taken from films, shouldn't it?
Maybe a 4 hour delay after the recce a/c has landed before enemy targets appear...
