New beta for testing...

New Mexico Goes to War, 2023

An American submarine is tasked with attacking a Chinese convoy in the Arabian Sea. USAF assets provide intelligence, etc., but the player controls only the New Mexico.

As always, please let me know what you think. Are there any problems, errors, events that are not working, etc. What can I do to make this a better and more challenging scenario?

Thanks!

First of all, I suck at sub stuff, so this was a good learning experience, thanks. I liked the setup and the recon by an uncontrollable side.
I was setup perfectly or so I thought, the fist type 54 was coming right at me and I was going to sink it and its ddg friend first... but of course even though I was pretty deep and not moving it saw me and fired first killing me.

So I looked at the china side and apparently its towed array is quite good so it should be avoided instead of stalked. I figured sinking the escorts would be best then it would be free reign on the rest. I guess that is not good tactics.

In looking at the Chinese side I noticed on another run thru that the Chinese warships are not on any type of mission, so the it looks like the only way they would attack the sub is if the sub is in the direct path. Shouldn't they be on an asw mission around the convoy so that if a sub is found they will attack it? other wise it seems like as long as you avoid them you can have your way and there is no problem. The single asw helo was down at the time, and its mission area was fairly large so it could have been far off at the time it was needed.

also the one helo is a maritime loadout - it doesn't have a torpedo, why not do the loadout with the torpedo?

I like the scenario, and convoy hunting but I'm feeling like I have too much awareness. If I am the CO of New Mexico, and lurking along at -200 ft, I wouldn't have this full situational awareness without coming up to periscope depth and putting up an antenna.

I realize this is a characteristic of sub warfare in CMANO when other than subs are involved on the friendly side. It seems I am more in the role of the area commander with full knowledge of New Mexico's activities.

Probably there isn't much that can be done about this and I should just enjoy the scenario as it is :-)

I bet you could do the recon and have it only available if the sub comes to periscope depth (side changed to friendly) and then when it dives the side changes back to neutral and the contacts fade.

This wouldn't work on normal scens with lots of units, but for a sub only scen it would.

Something like a trigger of time - every 1 minute or 5 minutes, then the action would be lua to check the subs depth, and if less than x set side of the recon to friendly, else neutral.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Special action to raise the antenna and receive an data downlink, similar to a couple of the Silent Service scenarios.

Just uploaded a new version. Biggest change is that I figured out how to keep the New Mexico from getting intel from the surface except at a few pre-determined times (this involves about a dozen events relying on lua script to change US posture towards SSN 779 from friendly to neutral and back again).

Mark,

I like this version better, without the complete intel picture. I started it but haven't finished. Busy today but I'll work run it more later this evening.

I like it. Although so far I've died a horrible death, torpedoed at 1400 ft depth. But I like the automatic data links.Going back to sub sensors only makes it "interesting" since you now know where the convoy is but don't know what's hunting you.

This is much better than version 1 and it seems like a good challenge (did I mention I died?)

darn.. this is fun.... really a good little scenario.....

i cruised west avoiding contacts..... when the special intel was passed oof to me.. and i had a general idea of the composition and direction of the red convoy... i got in the layer at 20kt's and cruised up under a friendly comercial vessal and went shallow at 5kt's using it to mask my signature... we creeped west on a flanking course to the red group...
i briefly would go to periscope depth to establish contact with red convoy... when i believed i was abreast the middle or the group... i bore north in the layer at 15kn's...
i got into the edge of the red group.. i went shallow and launched my weapons before the trailing frigate would discover me... i fired two torpedoes at him.. two single shots at at the closest commercial vessels... and two tomahawks at all the other red commerce vessels that were farther away.... i struck very ship except the two leading escorts.. and red went totally helter skelter.... by the end of it... i used all my weapons but the 12 tlams and i saved one torpedo for self defense...
when the clock ran out.. only one commercial vessel and two escorts could make to china.... the rest are sunk.. burning and dead in the water.....
while a only achieved a minor victory.... i did real good....

this is a really fine scenario... and very clever for sure.... i could only ask for two little things to be different.... a few more hours for the ships to sink.... and cut the intel events by 1/2 or 1/3.....

you did good... thank you....

Friends,

As per magi's feedback, I increased the time to 36 hours but rather than cut the intel events I simply spaced them out more...it's about one per four or five hours now...and eventually they just stop...the last 12-16 hours, you are pretty much on your own). Does anything else need to be done with this scenario or is it ready for the Community Scenario Pack? Thanks.

Thanks for nice scenario Mark! All looks okay, I noticed only one little issue with flight size of China aircraft.

Nice. The updated scenario is great. I did manage to sink about half the convoy but it was with a severely damaged NEW MEXICO, having taken a lot of damage from a torpedo dropped on me. There was a Pakistani sub shadowing me that I couldn't shake, and then a helicopter dropped a torpedo on me. Severe damage, managed to come up to shallow and launch everything I had, started to creep away but after a mile or two, dead in the water. Good challenge. And the amount of intel now seems good. You get an idea, then have to go hunting.

Just uploaded the third and probably final version with all corrections added. (Including the fact that I forgot to give the Chinese sub a mission...oops.) Please let me know if anything else needs to be done or if it is ready to add to the Community Scenario Pack. Thanks!

Played it today, found a pair of possible bugs, already reported them.

In the scenario desing side, the only detail is the pakistani agosta radiating while at periscope depth. Perhaps is deliberate but I've been said that is a big no-no for any sub.

Also almost all of USA planes where shot down by the escorts of the convoy due to continuous overflies, perhaps you should tweak a little their patrol zones.

Otherwise a nice sub scenario, thank you.
