Just a quick announcment that work has started on a new mod for Distant Worlds 1.

Expected release date : April 15, 2022
Mod Title : Star Trek 2022

My first step in the mod is to work with the Research Screen. Shown below is the research screen before any changes are made. You will notice the red arrows appearing on the research tree. These show research items that require another item to be researched prior to this researh beginning.

The screenshot below shows what the research screen looks like once I have removed the conditions that other objects must be completed prior to specific research projects able to be started.

As you can see below there are no longer any red arrows showing.

To do this is very simple.

In the main folder of the mod you are working on, create a copy of the research.txt file an save in same folder.
Then open research.txt with your text editor.

What you want to do is to search the file for every occasion where you find the following
", Y" of course searching without the ""

You will find ech of them on the parents line
example
PARENTS ;4, Y, 13, Y

What you want to do here is highlight Y, 13, Y and replace it with an N

This will give you the line readinng
PARENTS ;4, N

Go throuh the entire research.txt file repeating this every parent line where you see ", Y"

You should then see your research screen looking like the below without red arrows.

Now save the research.txt file and make sure Distant worlds still starts ok.

When we have tested the game and it starts ok after our changes, make a backp of research.txt

Now we are going to remove the research which gives us new fighters.

In research.txt search for FightERS.... you will see something like the following appear.
PROJECT ;57, Star Fighters, 1, 19, 0, 7, 0, 0.0,
COMPONENTS ;26
FIGHTERS ;0, 5

remove the line starting with FiGHTERS.
Do not remove any line if it does not start with the word FiGHTERS.....

What you should get is something like this.

PROJECT ;57, Star Fighters, 1, 19, 0, 7, 0, 0.0,
COMPONENTS ;26

If FighTERS was inbetween PROECT and COMPONENTS you will see a blank line between them like this
PROJECT ;57, Star Fighters, 1, 19, 0, 7, 0, 0.0,

COMPONENTS ;26


Get rid of the blank line and continue to the next line which starts with FightERS.

When all of them have been removed, save the file and check the game starts ok.

backup the research file before continuing.

The research file has many lines beginning with ABILITIES...... so take care when searching for lines starting with ABILITIES

For example you may find

PROJECT ;322, Heavy Armor Forces, 6, 30, 0, 0, 0, 0.0,
ABILITIES ;Improved Armor Defense, 5, 6, -25, 2
PARENTS ;69, Y, 320, Y

Remove the ABILITIES line so it looks like this

PROJECT ;322, Heavy Armor Forces, 6, 30, 0, 0, 0, 0.0,
PARENTS ;69, Y, 320, Y

Repeat where ever you see the line start with ABILITIES

Test to make sure Distant Worlds Universe starts OK

The target this week is to remove every project from the research screens.

No more wave weapons.
No more enhanced hyperdrives.
No more beam weapons or area weapons.
No more Unified Pulse Jump Theory.

Everything is going and we are starting with a clean slate.

A new research tree is going to be added to the mod which is unique to the Star Trek Universe.

Warp Drive....
Impulse Engines....
Phasers....
Photon Torpedoes....
Tractor Beams....
Universal Translators....
Tricorders....
Transporters....
Communicators....
Shields....
Long Range Scanners....
Subspace Coommunication....

And much more.

This mod is going to be a complete overhaul of Distant Worlds.

You will need to set up Starfleet Command as well as Starfleet Academy, train your ship crews with captains, engineers, navigators and helm officers.
Build your Federation Starships and begin mining operations to supply your ships with dilithium crystals and other needed resources.

Explore new worlds, meet new civilizations.

And then meet the Klingon and Romulan Empires who will not hesitate to destroy your ships and bases.
