Status: offline 		You may all remember my first post fromt he last AAR did of a game with PZB

"Admiral PZ "Yamamoto" B in a cruel twist of fate that just feels wrong send several sqns of Zeroes on a LR Suicide mission to intercept Admiral Nomad over Port Moresby 200 zeroes were sent and the sole Corsair on Escort managed to shoot down 199 of them...the last pilot seeing the futility of mixing it with the Marine F4U rammed admiral Nomads plane.

As a result the British Field Marshall Andy Mac is brought out of retirement from his beach house near Perth where he had been quietly drinking himself into oblivion wondering why Churchill had overlooked him for active command. (perhaps because he made Percival look competent but thats another story !!!)

In what is obviously a clerical error Andy Mac has been placed in command of all allied forces in the Pacific Theatre

(Curtin is reported to have said that drunken sot what the hell is Churchill playing at !!!)

General MacArthurs alleged response is unprintable.

No one knows why a British General has been appointed to take over a naval and air war after the British Army was so decisively defeated in India only time will tell what new screwups Andy mac can bring to the roll of dis honour of the British Army in this theatre....... "

That was last time this time in quirk of fate that same Field Marshall has been teleported back in tiem to refight the war but this time its all strangely different.....

I think we all know what screwup the Drunken British Field Marshall made - the death threats from Nimitz after i got all his pilots shot down during Marianas 1 - the press wars with MacArthur before he died of Malaria in the craphole that was Balikpapan - the shoot on sight posters at Pearl after yet another CVE went to Davy Jones etc etc.

But yes folks its true the Drunk is back...

I wonder what new cockups can I bring to the war !!!!!

At Pearl KB stuck around and toasted 7 out of the 8 USN BB's for little loss.

Apart from that its been the historic losses so far I havent really caught much of PZB's fleet and his subs have been active - I have plans but there is little I can do - for now,......

Status: offline 		No my fighters crucified the Vals on Day 2 but the kates came in covered by a large Zero CAP and had pretty much a free run

2 of the BB's were pretty wrecked anyway and would probably have sunk but it hurt to lose the other 4

Status: offline 		The single hardest thing to accept in any of these games is that you cannot stop the Japanese you can delay you can make costly but its very hard to totally stop them.

I am going to try and hang onto PM in this game as its loss puts back any attack back from that area hard to achieve.

Now what do I have to achieve that.

One of the most powerfull (albeit undertrained) combined arms units the Allies get is 3rd motor Bde

Its a nice combined arms unit (in theory at least) convoy WS 14 due in 30 days provides enough modern 25 pounders and AT guns and some Matildas to allow the unit to become combat effective I am placing Major General Basil Morris in charge of getting the unit to nominal combat efficiency when it will be sent to PM.

There is a real danger of rushing forward Aus or NZ Militia units but great caremust be taken - they are low exp and not well supported and you need to preseve the manpower which is low so I tend not to rush forward un prepared units except at great need.

My intended garriosn of PM is goping to be

CMF

30th Aus Bde (weak though it is)
3rd Motor Bde

AIF

2/4th MG Bn
Sparrow and Lark Bns
(Gull Bn is going to be cannibalised and is being sent to Sydney to disband as it will accelerate squad upgrades in 3rd Motor Bde)

So that will give me the equivalent of a single Division.

I will look to augment that force with as many AA guns as I can spare and at least one NZ Bn.

Again not committing forces until they are at least marginal.

Other forces will be sent as and when they are avaiblable

Status: offline 		After a weeks worth of turns I havent seen any movement towards SOPAC thats unfortunate because PZB never does things by halves and doesnt leave stuff uncovered. His lack of attacks in this theatre probably means he is concentrating on Malaya, PI and java.

This is regrettable as its good tactics.

I have reinforced Rabaul and a mine layer is enroute to lay a minefield but my options are limited.

When the time is right I may off load a Sqn of SBD's into PM to sink a few transports.

BUT I need to think now what do I do if he brings KB down - am I mentally prepared to fight for PM to the wire - if I am not reinforcing os a mistake.

The key point of decision will come when I commit 3rd Motor Bde which is about 30 days away.

I guess I need to wait and see until then.

Status: offline 		The US Arty convoy is heading for Suva and my carriers are between narau and Rabaul but fuel is going to be a problem

I have a light SCTF at new Cal and no fuel a convoy is en route from Brisbane but I will need to get my logistics up and running ASAP

I detached one base force from the Pensacola convoy and sent it to Tahiti as a routing point for convoys

Flak when concentrated is murderous to DB's and TB's and its the one thing I get a lot of early so I need to think how best to use it.

Colombo will get plenty as will PM apart from that I need to think where else

Status: offline 		Keeping PM is the best option however note most Japanese players will prep either the Imerial Guard brigade in Japan for it or 2 regiments the 44th and 90th one of whom is 90 exp. Most JFB like to take it early in AE like before 31/12/41 it will  take a few weeks to get the spare PP . This only requires some AK shipping and KB to show up.  

I like reinforcing Rabaul  (like you did) as its the stepping stone and this early in the war they can go Rabaul ->PM.  Good place to send your carriers if you knwo KB is somewhere else.

A lot of JFB are having issues with Burma worht noting about , i note he hit Victoria point.Can you do something to stop an air landing at Port Blair ?

Any House Rules ?

What about China ? If you dont allow Strategic bombing IChang is worthless . Changsha needs to be heavily reinforced and is so critical to the Jappanese bleed him there - its a great place ofr your arty.

It’s simple math really. If you pile a bunch of land units in Port Moresby, he will definitely bring in KB and enough Japanese land forces to take it and gobble up the free victory points. The problem for you is, it’s impossible to get enough fuel into the region of Northeast Australia in time to support sustained carrier ops for several months at least.

So all you can oppose him with is land based air. And that is woefully in short supply. I’d advise building up a force in Townsville, but not committing it to PM until you have everything you need to adequately support a defense of the base stockpiled at Townsville first.

If he comes before you’re ready, then nothing is lost. If he takes his time, then you may have enough time to get about 100k of fuel into Townsville. Once you’ve got that then you can at least oppose any invasions he may send and you can then ship everything across to PM and have at least some hope of keeping the base

If you go in early, I think you’re just handing him victory points as you won’t be able to defend them without US carriers in the area.

Posts like this are highly instructive. Taking myself as an example, I did realize the problem (i.e. the weak units and the danger of rushing them in too early) but not really came up with the solution (controlled disbanding and convoy asset management), so this really is very inspiring for me. Thanks for sharing !

A correlated question: How do you "earmark" the unit the contents of the convoy are supposed to go to - just disallow replacements for all other units in the relevant turns (and which are the relevant turns, the turn during which the convoy disbands or the one after that) ?

That being said, I'll probably be a silent reader most of the time - I want to read PzB's AAR as well and that always limits my contributions to both AARs. But read I will in order not to miss gems like this post !

Status: offline 		Convoy WS 12/OS 13 due in about 3 days has 180,000 tonnes of supply on board so I am sending xAK's to Capetown as that supply will be needed

Convoy WS 14/OS 14 due early Jan has a reinforced field coy RE on board (18 Brit Combat Engineer Sqds) a reinforced Bn's worth of British Infantry replacements (48 Squads) a Company of Indian Inf en route to reinforce 4th Indian Div in ME (12 Indian Inf Squads), 24 x 3" Mortars, 24 South African Armoured Cars en route to a SA Ard Car Regt in ME but diverted to Far East, 12 Matildas ordered by the Aus Govt, 24 x 25 Pounders and 36 Anti Tank Guns and 36 x 3.7" AA guns previously ordered by ther NZ and Aus Govts

All in all a substantial reinforcement for the allies enough to bring one or two units almost up to combat strength but as this is one of the biggest reinforment convoys I get its value is akin to Churchills 'Tiger' cubs and must not be wasted so I will need to think long and hard which formations are going to recieve the benefit of this largesse.

My initial thoughts are not to waste them in Malaya or Java but to turn on replacements for 17th Indian Division which is badly under strength and 3rd Aus Motor Bde as these are first echelon reinforcements i.e. the units being sent to the front immediately.

Also a battery of 3.7" AA Guns can be used to replace the Burma Aux AA Regt with pukka AA Guns

Anything left over I will hold in reserve.

So that means

3rd Motor Bde
17th Indian Div
1st Burma Aux AA Regt

all get priority for reinforcement devices

I need to also look at replacing Hutton (Burma Command) and Smyth (17th Ind Div) commanders

As well as heath and the III Corps commanders ASAP

Going to be interesting

OK objectinves for Dec - Jan 42

1. Try to get reinforcements to Samoa and Fiji

804th EAB
808th EAB
47th Construction Regt
19th Combat Engineer Regt
34th Combat Engineer Regt

I want to start getting those bases built up ASAP

Air cover will come from 22nd Bomb Group with Marauders and 31st FG with P39's

Throw in a couple of base forces and a Regt or two of US national guardsmen and we have a fortress under construction

One small request andy, could you just copy/paste the relevant AAR stuff, the entire report is a bit of a hefty amount to wade through. Purely from a personal preferance here, feel free to ignore and i will be reading this regardless.

think he'll go for india this game ? I suspect he might.

and no withdrawls ? humm , never even crossed my mind to try that option. i assume that affects every withdrawl ships/planes and land units ? means the Queens can be very valuable to you now. should help get men to SW pac and australia nice and fast. Compared to AP/AK anyway. as you did the TOE for ground forces which side will benefit the most do you think from this ? As an allied player I would be overjoyed at the no withdrawl option. But not played japan enough to even look at her options in that regard.

While holding PM is a laudable goal , I would make sure suva and noumea were safe before even thinking about PM, i do however move over 'black brigade' ?? from darwin on turn 1 so its not a freebie for japan.

You planning on pulling the HQ/air support from the PI this game ? not a simple thing but do-able and very valuable units for darwin defence imo.

anyhoo i'll stop rambling as im very happy to see the two of you having a rematch, thanks for doing this AAR and i wish you well.

Status: offline 		Um not sure it probably helps allies more certainly in terms of playability I have no idea why he chose that option.

The main benefit for the allies is 7th Armoured Bde and the HQ of 70th Brit Div

The japanese never lose the Thai army so its probably a wash in terms of who benefit on land early for the allies and later for Japan.

Some of the Aus armour hangs around as well but its tight on replacements so not sure how much help that end up being.

De facto a lot of the units that keep are stuck on the US West Coast and in India restricted to India comand so unless he attacks US net net I probably gain about 2 Divs out of this option - PZB gains 4 or 5 Divs but all weak Thai forces.

In the air you still need to withdraw units to get the new version and I dont have the replacements to make the keeping of the units decisive - again it probably favours the allies a littel but mostly late war.

At sea its a help to the allies because it simplifies my management and gets me a few specials - e.g. keeping the Queens is a big help

This is a great point I haven't seen made elsewhere. I pretty much ignored flak in WITP. In AE it's very important for the Allied player, especially to holding the line at the northern Burma border. It makes up a lot for weak Allied fighter opportunities in the first half of 1942. Any dead Japanese pilots in that period, by whatever means, pays dividends later. You really do get large waves of flak coming into Aden, etc. early on.

As said down-thread, I also did not grasp the utility of focused disbanding in this, my first AI game. When I play again I'll spend a lot more time on early pool management.

Status: offline 		Your fighters are not great and are not numberous early days of the war but you do get a lot of AA units that historically were sent to Malaya/Java

HAA Regts

1st RM HAA, 6th HAA, 77th HAA

LAA Regts

1st Indian, 21st and 35th and 48th LAA Regts

Mixed Burma Aux AA Regt

Plus in Malaya 4 HAA and 1 LAA Regts

And the 4 big RAF Group base forces have a LAA Regt and HAA Regt organic to their TOE so the allies in India do get a lot of AA - to much which is why they started to cannibalise them from infantry replacements in 44

There are five areas that need to be covered and damned few combat units to do it.

1. Assam Sector

Very few troops available I will pull one of the fragmented Indian Base forces into the area and the Assam Bn's plus possibly a Chinese Div when bought via PP's for Ledo.

In total thats all I can spare for that sector but as long as BurCorps is still in the fight then thats probably enough.

2. Calcutta Sector

I can spare more troops for this sector but despite the fact that I would love to hold Akyab I dont want to commit forces off the rail network.

Initially all I have is the two Bde Groups of 14th Indian Div - and that aint a lot. Add to that a pretty much useless Armoured bde equipped with trucks and in Dec 41 I am weak....

3. The coastline between Calcutta and Madras

Will get a fragment of a base force and a couple of Bns of infantry and an Indian Cav Regt as well as a newly mechanised 16th light Cav regt as a reaction support.

Enough to stop a raid but not an attack in strenght

4. Madras Sector

Madras itself is covered by 19th Indian Div which is doing double duty as COIN and anti invasion and an

5. Colombo Sector

I have the 3 Bdes of 34th Indian Div scarttered across the island and will reinforce when I can

Reinforcements

7th Indian Div will eventually be freed up from garrison duty in the north but it needs time to rest and train
255th Armoured Bde same
254th Armoured Bde same

These three formations if trained and at full strength are powerfull as they are now they are weak and untrained.

The issue I face is that most of my dcent forces are deployed overseas

3 Div equivalents in Burma another 3 in Malaya with only 18th Brit not committed

I get 23rd Indian Div and 7th Armoured Bde soon but even with them India will remain weak for months and its a difficult balancing act to worry about for the next few months

Status: offline 		Discovered one issue with no disbands - I will still need to disband some units.

I only get 12 Vickers MMG Squads a month and only 16 Bren Sections - these between them have a hhuge amount of the firepower of all CW forces and they are shared by all CW forces.

I will probably have to cannibalise some of the Indpt Vickers Bns to fill up my Divs.

So no disbandments is of limited use as the replacement rates of devices was set taking account of these 'extra device' that return to the pool.

In reality I would prefer to know where PZB is going then I can direct the shared devices in that direction

Its a difficult balancing act knowing which way to send my limited munitions need to pay carefull attnetion to sig int and try to find a pattern
