After the Saudi refinery strike by Houthi rebels I've been inspired to make a scenario! I can't find much info on the type of drone used other than it is a derivative of a 2018 Iranian model. The Iranian model in the DB, Shahed, has no weaponry.

So what would make the next best proxy in capability? Pakistani? Which is a copy of the Chinese drones?

With the plethora of homegrown drone variants I'd love to see more scenarios explore the potential battlefield effects.

Looks like this is not drones, but ordinal cruise missiles https://imp-navigator.livejournal.com/853454.html

More like a cross between the two, drones with a warhead - or Kamikaze UAV. Most are much smaller and designed to loiter over the battlefield to attack when a target presents itself, but these are more the long distance type.

If they are cheap enough to make, Kamikaze UAVs are actually a pretty good idea I think, like a very long range TV guided bomb. I could see a helicopter/light carrier's capability rise exponentially with a bunch of those available to launch.

Use the unarmed drone and then use Lua or the Event engine detonate a warhead on target if it enters the target area.

It seems like 'Eilat Shock' - Swarming kamikaze drones can deal a blow to power plant or industrial facilities.

To convert this geopolitical situation into a small scenario I think you might need to add some semblance of an air defence around the production facility. I am curious as to what (if any) was there during the weekend strike. One key is what kind of signature did the incoming weapons present? Knowing what they actually were would be important. Maybe Saudi will set up some kind of no-fly-zone around its plants so that any aerial target will be immediately engaged. Maybe that's not at all practical however.

Kevin

PS: news analyst just said this morning: there was a "miserable" failure of the Saudi air defence in this matter. But again that would depend on what was in place. Maybe it's just a failure in planning.

It seems it wasn't drones but cruise missiles, at least 17.

I'm seeing reports it was covered by both Patriots and I-Hawk battery.

Well if there was any air defence around the site then I would suspect mass executions:

What a horrible place to live or work in as a contractor.

Here's a write up of someone using Command to recreate the refinery strike.

There is a difficulty in CMANO that a unit must be represented as either an aircraft or a guided weapon (or aerial decoy). That presents some problems for some of the drones with built in warheads that may have substantial loiter and intelligence capabilities alongside their direct attack capabilities. Many of these weapons considered Drones as opposed to missiles like the Israeli Harop could return and land and be reused if desired while a tomahawk would not be able to do so.

It would perhaps be important to keep up with developing weapon systems to consider how best to handle these systems in the game engine, perhaps with a new unit type or expanding existing ones to allow “aircraft” type drones to have suicide warheads and make attacks with them. Although I think a new drone unit type may be reasonable as it would open the door for targeted anti-drone electronic warfare which is likely to become prevalent in the future.
