Set a group of ground units and only the group lead is following the path. Remainder of units are taking a straight line. It doesn't appear that they reform at all when changing directions. "Group Lead can slow..." is checked.

This will be fixed in the next update. In this case the group is assigned to a strike mission and is engaged offensively on a mission target -- the lead plots a path but the group members just go straight toward the target.

Until the fix is available you can partially work-around this issue by setting the ship/sub engagement radius for the strike mission to something like 5-10nm, which will help keep the group together.
