Hi,

I got this strange warning message when I tried to move a land unit OUT of a stacked hex.

I have had this warning before and thought it was a mistake because I was moving a unit OUT of the original hex. I chose to NOT cancel the move. However, when I did so I had to delete an air unit in the original hex.

This time I paid more attention. In the previous phase, I moved an air unit to this hex and got a message about 'do you want to exceed the stacking limit' (or something similar) to which I said yes.

Now when I try to move the land unit out I get the warning message above and will have to delete an air unit if I go ahead.

Did a quick flyover of other stacked hexes on the map and I can see lots of stacks with 2 land units and 1 air, but no other hexes with 1 land and 2 air. Can you only have 1 air unit in a hex without consequences? I'm sure I've had 2 air units stacked without problems before (but may be wrong). Is it just a problem when there is a land unit in the hex?

I expect that you are moving either:

(a) an HQ unit; or

(b) an engineer unit

out of the hex.

Either one will reduce the air stacking limit of the hex by one.

You will then need to eliminate an air unit.

It could be something else, but this is the most likely explanation.

Hi, I edited my original post with additional info (please refresh to see).

Yes it was an HQ unit. If that reduces the air stacking limit by 1, presumably you can't have 2 air units in the same hex. I didn't know that but glad I've found out.

I guess I will have to move 1 of the air units out before moving the land HQ. Thanks.

Ok, my theory about HQs allowing 2 air units to stack is dumb. Just rebased an air unit and it is sitting as follows without any info message about exceeding stacking limits.

That isn't a land HQ unit, but I now have 2 air units in the same hex without a warning about over stacking. Am now confused. I thought I understood but I don't.

The stacking limits for aircraft units not flying a mission are:
• Minor port hex: 2
• Major port or city hex: 3
• Mountain, desert mountain, or swamp hex: 0
• Any other hex: 1
• Hex with HQ: +1
• Hex with ENG: +1

And Flying boats stack differently:
Flying boats have a blue circle around their air-to-sea factors. Flying boats can only stack in a coastal hex (even if the coast is only on a lake). You can only ever stack 1 flying boat in a hex, but this is in addition to any other aircraft there.

So you could stack 3 aircraft in a swamp hex if it contains one HQ, and two ENG, and for each of the land units that leave that swamp hex one air unit would be overstacked...

Flying boats on Lakehexes that are blizzard or snow are destroyed if I recall correctly.

Thanks. I can see those air units are in a city hex which explains it........
