A simple pronunciation question:

How do you correctly interpret the roman numeral that precedes an Army Corp?

Is it “V” (v) Corp or “5th Corp”?

What would VII Corp be?

7 Corps.

Roman numerals are a plague to some once the numbers reach beyond 1 thru 10 though.

That's what I thought, but I just wanted to remove the doubt.

The "v" pronunciation came from watching the old TV series MASH. I remember watching it with my great-aunt who was a career Army nurse in the pacific during WWII and later until she retired in the mid 1970’s. Anyway, in the TV show, they used to always refer to "I” Corp HQ. I guess that's what has always left me questioning the numeral.

Some usages would be a reflection of slang.

"I" Corps being pronounced "Eye" Corps, might have just been out of it sounding neater than One Corps (doesn't roll of the tongue so well).

Some of the names of some of the units in some of my wargames though, you have to just look at them and not bother trying to kill yourself wonder what the friggin number actually was heheh.

Les, what are you thinking about? You don't say "7 Corps" or "One Corps" when identifying a unit, no matter whether the written designation is in Arabic or Roman numerals.

"I Corps" or would be referred to as "First Corps" when talking about it. "VII Corps" is "Seventh Corps." When Arabic numerals are used, they are in ordinal form, as "1st Corps" or "7th Corps."

The most recognizable slang use of "Eye Corps" was during the Vietnam era when the country was divided into four corps areas, I, II, III, and IV.

I never said I would employ "One" coprs silly :) like I said it sounds "unnattural" hehe.

But I can assure you LVXXVI is just not going to fall off your tongue in any simple fashion hehe.

It is clear, that it is easy to pronouce "Seventh" corps, but easier to write VII corps in a small space.

Which brings me back to slang. People will use what is easiest to emply under a given circumstance.

Les,

I agree. I personally can't stand using the roman numerals for anthing over the equivalent of 10. That's why I used plain numbers when I designed our first board wargame, Trial of Strength, which was a strategic simulation of the East Front in WW2. Not only are they easier and quicker to read but they fit on the counters better too.

Sure it does. It's pronounced "Lavixivee."

Actually, you're never going to see "LVXXVI," as it makes no sense.

The writing has to follow the conventions of the military establishment naming its units. The Germans, as you know, liked to use Roman numerals because they saw themselves as the latest coming of the Empire, so you got stuff like "LXVII Panzerkorps" (67th Panzer Corps).

The pronunciation is always your own language's interpretation of the numerals. So when, as an American, for example, you see "LXVII," you say "67." If you see "LXVII Panzerkorps," you say "67th Panzer Corps."

Where's the problem with that? I learned Roman numerals in grammar school. They didn't seem difficult then and seem even less so now.

That number I wrote in roman was just the first letters that came to my mind hehe. I hate normal math, so not surprising I can't get roman math correct hehe.

I'd say you read out the Roman numerals like they were ordinary digits.

Like the XLVIII Panzer Corps, which is also (correctly) often referred to as the 48th Panzer Corps in WWII Allied sources.

It's just a matter getting used to. Personally I sometimes find it confusing if two similar numbers are mentioned/pictured close, like XLVIII and XLVII Corps.

I learned them when I was a kid from trying to decipher the years that movies and tv shows were made. got very good at it too, so the use of Roman numerals has always been fine with me.

So...

Hang X or Give me V!
