Nein ,urgent despatch HQ. SIR!
Col. Kroll new this was big,it had relitvely quite for sometime now.Unfolding the paper he read,START PLAN 'UHU'.
In the near distance the unmistakable sound of 76,2 mm artillary suddenly filtered through the air.
So much for plan "UHU" ,a night operation devised for Kroll with a full complement of the latest armour, designated "FORCE MOTHER".It's a clear day, high noon,high vis in typical russian undulating terrain with roads of no impotance which go everywhere but nowhere.
Counter battery request sir! the radio operater asks,its from the 2IC!
Sure, why stop now?

Meanwhile at army group centre supreme HQ:
MOTHER sat reading the latest comms and came accross a message from an old friend,Gen von Klinkenhoffen ,together they'd been through thick n' thin,crete,italy and the ost front to name a few grand battles

.
All he could think was his friend was thousands miles away stuck in some air traffic control tower,its not his fault he shot himself in the foot he recalled.Things were a bit vauge after the 'Starlingrad Incident'.Anyways better tell Kroll to make a good fist of it!.

Scouts have reported in,sir!,trucks with guards and gaz AA at the hieghts to the centre and north.
1st.Lt. Schwietzer radiod in from the 10/4 and asks when he's due for a Whirblewind?
Kroll asks "Whirblewind?"
Supposed to be a replacement for the Sdkfz 10/4,his has just been shot from under him.Apparently it was one of ours but one of theirs.The incident occourerd in the southern sector near the little village at base of the hill.
Kroll thought juuuust great!,now their using our own equipment against us!

and we have flak units doing scouting.Whats this war comming to ?

Reports from the wireless comms indicate disciplined determined drive to the objectives.no reports of enemy armour apart from those in the southern sector.Scouts report lots of trucks and infantry being transported too and fro down the central east-west road axis.Enemy arty now in full swing focusing at the southern sectors village hill and forest .Enemy AT well hidden.Sporadic arty fire at the central heights.
losses:
1X Sdkfz 10/4 FLAK WAGON
1X Pz1b recon AFV.
Kroll looked at the situ report,when will Ivan commit his tanks?

The southern sector has taken measures to secure the heights objective with the elimination of a capt Pz IV and SMG squad.

Smoke has been laid down by the soviet arty trying to cover the approaches of scattered units from the north - northeast edging towards the southern heights.Sighting the enemy is proving to be a challange especially 2 x hmg's and a deadly zis 76.2 mm AT gun or two.

The central obs now has the russians commiting to taking the heights with the advance guards squads dropped off earlier by the trucks who have run home to safety.Red arty in support.lots of lead here from both sides.
The northern height objective,by far the most defensible position

is occupied by the russians forward infantry deployment and has been quiet bar the odd 82mm round.
Essentially the russians are trying to group their scattered units somewhere for a decisive push.

In the southern sector the ruskies managed to setup a 3 x guard assault a the base of the hill under the cover of previously laid smoke with zis 76.2mm AT and captUred Pz IV long range support.However 50mm mortar,Marder,rifle,pz1b,stug and IF combination managed to scatch a pZIV and repulse all inf units as well as surpress the nasty ZIS AT gun.
Ski troops also manged to inflict losses to a SMG Sqd. who also were attempting to engage the southern meelee from the east.The russians seemed determined to capture this objective as they have focused 122mm arty along with 76.2 mm and morter fire.
The centre has seen a rethink in russian strategy as they have temporarily retreated to await reinforcements and/or more attrittion via more arty as is the red way.
LOTS OF LEAD EVERYWHERE,LOTS OF EVERYTHING.
A Pz1b was unfortunly lost to a hidden Zis between cental and southern hills in the valley contour.

Kroll listened intently to the frantic radio chatter,trying to visualize the state of play from his map laid upon the table.
It was clear that the intensity of the russian artillary had not been effected by his counter battery fire,however it also had not been decisive.
The south has so far been the scene of most action with the swift capture of the heights and village at the southern base catching the opposing commander by surprise.from the transmissions guards units had been repulsed but at a modest cost, but the red AT defences has made pushing on a difficult proposition,though not impossible.
A fammiliar voice suddenly rose clear as a bell above all the din from the wireless,It was that SGT. from the stug section,who was presented with the Iron Cross by the then General ,von Paulus.A quick glance of the map showed a rapid movement from the assembly area to the central objective.CHARGE!!!! was heard then 5 Minutes of frantic talk was crackling throughout that period amongst the din of flak,HE.MMG and assorted small arms.
Suddenly a code was heard,"ALPHA EIN"enemy succesfully engaged,initiating status "ZEBRA" ,Kroll smiled
A despatch letter was quitely passed to Kroll,its was from the commander of the south element of FORCE MOTHER.
SMOKE LAID BY RUSSIANS.EXPECTING ATTACK IN FORCE FROM EAST.PZ1b destroyed by AT defences.initiating status" BRASS ".
The russians had not committed their armour this could be it.The next few minutes intell will determine what to do.RETREAT, HOLD ,EXPLOIT.

They're everywhere! was the last thing Sgt,Schwietzer was heard saying.His iron cross couldnt save him now.

1 Lt. Kramer suddenly was on the radio, commander of the stug platoon who had initiated ZEBRA."Artillary!,Artillary! there throwing everything at us.buzzz....crackle..spatz,we need more artillary sup.....ooooweee...spizz.......ates 34,56.
Kroll had heard it all before ,sadly everything was commited there was nothing he could do except write the standard letters back to the fatherland ending..... he was a good soldier who did not suffer.He was a hero.HIEL HITLER.

Not much had been heard from the south,Kroll was glad,they must be digging in waiting for the expected assault.The centre was his concern at the moment.

2nd. Lt. Klien NORTH SECTOR has broken radio silence Herr Oberst.
Reports that at location "TANNENBERG" ambush succesfully conducted, 1 x t34-76 destroyed and 2 x tankendeski platoons suppressed.Currently under artillary bombardment from 76.2 and 122mm.

Col. Kroll had guessed correctly!,an attempted flanking maneuver to the far north at the base of the steppe had been punished quickly and decisively,however now he realized that he was up against a cunning foe, who had not put all his eggs in one basket.Recon had reported sustaintial tank fires from depth accros the battlefeild.there was more too come.

In the central sector the news came direct from the 2 IC, 1st. Lt. Spegler,ARTILLARY, ARTILLARY AND MORE ARTILLARY along with probes along the defensive positions by guards and engineers.conscripts now evident

The southern sector where the covering smoke had been laid finally revealed smg squads with a GAZ truck flak platform approaching . The elite ski squad with armored support agressively countered to the detriment of the russians both physically and mentally.FLAK DESTROYED,SMG's eliminated or reduced to a pulp.Arty the only response. [as expected]

There was no panic being exhibited by any of the sectors, however they had been held well by the AT defenses and were unable to capitilize on the initial success despite being unable to capture the nothern obs."PLAN UHU' was out of the question in these conditions.

"Despatch rider!"Koll called as he wrote down his message on a grubby paper bag.
"I want a reply ASAP,and you personally shall deliver the reply direct to me.Capiche!."
The rider had to run as the Stower 40 had been commandered by "RECON NORD", A 50 meter sprint to the radio tent and time was of the essence.
As he ran he thought of the time he was winning his event at the Berlin Olympics in 1936,he was in front at the 50 meter mark, he was last at the finish.He wondered where was Jessie Owens now?

The northern sector had seen more russian probes with the anailation of another t34 and support infantry but the inevitable 122mm keeps on comming.

The central sector is again deathly quite apart from the ever present russian artillary, and the occasional guards squad wandering into the front lines who hastilly retreat at the first shots.Smoke is being laid, we await the masses of conscripts and KV 1s seen lurking previously in the rear areas

In the south sector the agressive posture caught the reds by surprise and they have retreated to regroup leaving numerous dead and dazed,but the arty still keeps on comming

MEANWHILE AT THE HQ
Message reply recieved from the radio operator and our runner sprints to the ops table the other 50 meters return.As he was running he glimpsed out of the corner of his eye somthing that wasnt right

The russians are pushing through between central and south sectors in the valley contours between the two hieghts.A furocious battle was initiated by guards squads charging the line and the hmgs creating a crossfire into the valley again suppressing mobile halftracks. 2 xZIS AT guns have been pushed up to support a push by kv1s armour which fortunately had been countered by the halftracks and rifle squads and a marder finally admitting a "coupe de grace" to the KV,which stemed the soviet onslaught.

wharfram rockets were fired in the vacinity of a build up at the far end of the valley towards the amalgum of AT ,HMG and guards squads,with apperently little effect.

GAZ AA flak trucks have now been a bit more bolder and are pushing up to the front lines showing that the armour attrition is now biting and thatb the infantry gains nmade are not to be lost to the standard german counters being made directly against individual units in promising positions.

All in all the germans have been stout resolute and agressive when need be with a steady loss count accross all arms whereas the russians are now pressed for time and are now beginning to feel the bite of pushing at the objectives,however its still anybodys fight,red quantity v german quality

The northern push by the russians was thwarted easily however the terrain is not condusuive to a mechanized push so its the status quo ,due to signs again of a defense in depth,AT, FLAK and the suspected hidden guards in the defensive terrain.

Turn 15 of 19 so its now time crucile,essentially the reds are trying to create a breakthrough with what armour they have still got and vice versa for the nazis.the quality of the red manpower is now as low as it can go as no new units have been seen for a while.the germans hold the south comforably as wells the v hexes all per turn, whereas the russians hold the north again all per turn.
The centre now is the scene of all the agression by both sides and from turn 2 its been the status quo of 4 v hexes for the germans and 1 for the russians.despite all the smoke, artiilary rockets, armour, flak, AT ,trucks,guards, rifles ,coscripts, AFV's and high exposive its been a struggle for both sides to keep what theyve got.
Whos got the nerve?

The german ski company had fought like demons in the far south basically eliminating every threat, now they have been rushed to the scene of an attempted red break through,just in time to thwart a menacing kv which had broken the southern lines right flank l
.Everything has been trown at the kv with tremenous losses but it has been stopped in its tracks ,but not dead!.

In the centre red stagglers put up a fight as best as can be expected against reseRve PZIVG ,20mm flakverling and fresh rifle squads.Long rane AT and howitzers thwarting any possible capitalization.ALL HEXES IN GERMAN HANDS HERE,FINALLY!.

THE NORTH HAS BEEN THE STATUS QUO .A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK!

Finally the germans have a foothold on the southern slopes of the northern hill ,and have capitalized by moving a platoon of rifles and a flakvierling in support.WIth this fire lanes have been created with LOS to enemy units which now are being eliminated rather frequently.
Unforunately t ime doesnt seem to be with us to capture any of the contestable hexes in the northern obs.
