if so, what exactly do you use them for?

i tried an experiment, in which i created an Air Combat TF with Enterprise. then i created an escort TF of a few cruisers (it was my attempt to re-create historical cruiser divisions) and told it to follow the Enterprise TF. i did the same for a few TF's of DD's, also historically created in their respective Divisions) is this a proper way to use Escort TF, or am i completely off my rocker.

thanks for any ideas

Pete

Hi, The escort TF is used to keep damaged ships and their escorts together. No ship will ever split off and form a new TF while assigned to escort TF.
Place damaged ships in them and assign DD (ASW type ship) for protection.
Escort TF are an addition since game release so not covered in manual yet.

Hi, No you did it right but assigned the wrong mission. The escorting CA were in fact a surface combat TF. Just use that mission and have them follow your CV TF.
This TF will always be the first TF any enemy surface combat TF fights. However it will not provide AA protection if CV TF attacked by air. For that you'll need CA inside the CV TF.
These ships would be considered part of the aircombat "screen" and the ships belong in the aircombat TF as such.

I'm hoping that the devs (actually our heroic Mike Wood) will add the ability to group ships in divisions to simplify ship management.

I've found another use for escort task forces. If 30 ships arrive in San Fran, and I want to move all of them to Pearl without loading troops or supplies, I use an escort task force. You can put fleet carriers, battleships AND merchants in the same task force.

I use this only for transport of ships to the bases I want them in. You can't load supplies and stuff AND have carrier and BB escorts. but it saves me a little bit of effort (making two task forces for the trip to Pearl)

As far as I'm concerned, I put CVs and CAs together in TF. Then I create an ASW TF with DDs and order them to follow CVs. They did a great job to push away enemy subs but I suspect they don't give any AAA support to the main force. Anyway, it's not my idea but an advice I read in this forum (maybe from Mr.Frag).

Thanks. That gives me a better understanding of what they are intended to be in Witp.

However, when I was trying to figure the Escort mission out sans help, I 'Auto' created a few
and they allways autocreated with 1 or 2 AKs. I don't remember if the AKs were damaged.

You would think the autocreate AI would initially create an escort TF with ONLY escort type vessels correct? Nope, perhaps this needs tweaking?

Escort TF are also useful to send your Pearl Harbor damaged BBs back to the West Coast for repairs. I create an escort TF with the damaged BB and a couple of DDs MSW or whatever, and then send it back to Frisco, LA, San Diego or Seattle, with orders to auto disband. Fire and forget!

Ditto this here... I even send them to operational bases this way too. Right now I have Wasp, escorts and a couple of BB's moving with some transports to Noumea.

Just an observation on SURFACE TFs and the escort function.

They work very well screening invasion fleets during surface combat. In one PBEM game, the IJN invasion fleet for Rabaul was bounced by several heavy CAs and thier escorts. Over a couple of days of combat, they Allied naval assets were never able bring thier guns to bear on the invasion fleet although many of the IJN naval ships were sunk. The escorting surface TF always engaged first, allowing the invasion fleet to unload.

And I usually put reaction something around 3.

I'm invading mariannas now. AI had some anchored BBs at Saipan, so my CVs missed them (were at naval attack). AI formed Surf combat TF and tried to engage invasion fleet. My escort TF repulsed night attack and actually moved 2 hexes next day and angaged anemy TF at Saipan (it was already creramed by my CVs). And I had agressive commander for that TF too.
