DAY 1

PBEM 10/6/43 STOCK

The KB had made a very successful attack on Colombo etc sinking about 20 AK and a few British DD about two months ago. So I have been considering another raid . I selected Darwin as the allied Naval there cannot run away in land !
the allies are trying to advance in The mariannas

Objective to pin large allied naval assets ( no CV ) against the wall and sink them stopping a possible allied advance in the area soon . Sailing from the north ( Kandari ) my massive force sets sail undetected for one full and avoiding the many subs by taking less direct routes day .The allied super CV TF is over near Baker( a long way away ) . I suspect the BB Washington is in Darwin port ( having one month ago taken 2 torps from a sub ) . Each end of my attack is supported by Nells and Betty in case t5he allied ships make a run for it .

So here is my force The entire KB in 5 TF in one hex sails from Kandari

One surface combat TF fast 2CL and 10 DD to rush into Darwin

One surface TF Yamato , Musashi, Fuso , Yamashiro , 4CA and 8DD for bombardment of Darwin

4 SS , 3 AO and several small ASW TF in support

about 150 LBA mainly Nell and Betty some Zero for LRCAP

Expected opposition

250 - 300 + LBA probably with quite high experience as they have been doing a lot of bombing

Allied surface units estimated 1-3BB , 2CA , 2 CL 10 DD, 10 PT and about 10 +SS

The day before the big attack it goes a bit wrong , very wrong - OMG Their are about 70 Beauforts ( which I did not know were there ) which attack Yamoto TF and sink ( despite LRCAP from the KB it was not enough only 30 Zeros ) Fuso and put 5 torps and two bombs on Musashi and 5 bombs on Yamoto ( causing 2 damage ) . Musashi retires crippled at about 7 knots !!

Loads of recon planes bring DL to maximum on Darwin

After taking the dog for a long walk I decide to continue the attack despite the fact the Yamoto TF may find itself out classed now and not perform the bombard

The next day both surface TF will arrive at Darwin ( at night we hope ) and the KB will be 3 or 4 hexes away ( yes in range of the Beauforts ) in support and get the allied naval units whilst takling all the LBA - A tough job .

OK over to you guys what happens next day ?

OK here's my guess:

Yamato TF is involved in several small night engagements and only does a weak bombardment.
Next morning Allied LBA launches a major attack on KB and depite heavy losses to CAP, some get through causing damage to 2 CVs.
Some Allied LBA sink a ship from the Yamato TF that was previously damaged by CD guns the night before and lagged behind the withdrawal.
KB launch strikes on remnants of Allied SCTFs and sink some minor combatants.

Result - Allies come out ahead.

Do you know if Darwin has a defensive minefield in place?  If it does then make sure there're minesweepers with that bombardment TF, or Yamato & friends may find their mission has some unexpected and unwelcome party crashers.

I agree with the earlier post; if there are surface combatants in TF's at Darwin, Yamato isn't going to do much bombardment.  She'll be shooting at the other ships first, wasting time and allowing the bombers to roam free when the sun comes up.  Can you still create a SW TF and send it in before the Bombardment TF gets there?

John
No mine ships were detected during recon and there were no mines
there is a surface fast surface TF going in before the bombardment .
Actually the Yamoto TF was set at suface BUT when I went to change it to bombardment the game would not let me so I had to create a new Bombard TF and Tanaka vanished as commander ?

Tallyho
One bit is slightly correct the rest is wrong
Actually in the night the Yamoto TF sailed straight through the allied ships Bombard Patrol do not retire and did the bombardment but the result was almost nothing!!!

I will post the AAR after someone gets it nearly correct .

I would say not good. If you bring any naval forces within 4 hexes of an Allied base with AF level 4 or above, you are looking for Beauforts to cause havoc.   Since you said he has 70 of them there and if he has high experienced (over 70) B-25/26 that can pass a die roll that places 1000 lb GP on them vs 500lb GP, they will probably score very high. He sustained a high rate of causalities, but won the battle.

Outcome: 3 or 4 CVs severely hit and/or sunk and at least 1 BB (probably 2 sunk).

Rule of Thumb: Don't bring any ships close (4 hexes or closer) to a size 4 AF late in the war if your the Japanese player (unless LBA has closed it down or nearly so). If this was Big B's mod, you would be in more trouble as he has Beauforts in spades!!

Does experience effect loading of weapons????T thought that was on range.

Your version is most horrible . Actually not correct.
True I did not know the Beauforts were there I supoose a lot were damaged by the attack that sank the fuso and put 5 torps in the Mush.

The rule of thumb given is good advice of coarse and this PBEM stated in May 42( and two years of real time - I was very upset by my loss ) . I know I need to preserve ships . BUT I need to make some sort of effor to stop the allied preperations for attack my theory is i must do that anywherewhere the allied CV are not . I will not wait for them to find me .

Also remember although I ma close to the allied base ( I ned to be to reach his ships ) the KB can call on maybe 50 Zero on LRCAP 11 hexes although I never used them in this assault.

Actually, the game allows a player to run bombardment TFs in from 360 miles out in one phase using "full speed" so he could stay 6 hexes away, which is effectively outside of any LBA range save the 4Es....this is one of my biggest pet peeves with this game.

From your hint that the bad and worse results are not correct, it would seem to leave some sort of Japanese victory as the result.  How's this for an outcome:
  1. Pitched naval battles off Darwin that night.  Your destroyer force gets cut up and splits into multiple task forces.
  2. Per your comment, the Yamato force goes in, beats up Darwin to little effect, and then pulls out.
  3. During the aerial attacks the following day, the Allies are overwhelmed with intelligence.  There are six to twelve task forces in range (all those ASW and MSW TF's help fox the Allies).  Allied fatique is up and morale is down from the strikes the previous day.  Some key units fail morale check and we get a spasm of relatively poorly coordinated strikes that get badly mauled by Ubercap from the KB.
  4. Your own strikes on Darwin go off well, ravaging the shipping in harbor.

Luck broke your way that a big strike didn't saturate the KB's CAP.

I'm mine-happy and tend to put at least 2000 mines around forward bases and 4000 mines around major bases.  However, Darwin would need an MLE and quite frankly Darwin would probably be one of the last places I would budget a mine tender or mine layers, even for late 1943.  Mine defenses would have forced you to tip your hand with MSW missions or risked having more easy-to-hit cripples limping away with big holes in their bottoms.

Cav,
I have seen both B-25 & 26 pass this die roll once they get above 70 experience. I haven't seen any A-20s do it yet. Just got a few squadrons above 80 after using Darwin as target practice for a while, but no naval targets to test this out. It does happen with 4e bombers, too.

Niceguy,
I should have been more clear that they would still be within 4 hexes in daylight. I understand your frustrations as none known (to me) Allied TB can reach that far after a BB TF has come and gone.

A glorious fight for the IJN!

That is very bold taking IJN CV's within 4 hexes of a large Allied airbase in '43. If you stay another turn, you have to make sure you keep that airbase shut down, or you could end up with damaged CVs

The north coast of Australia is a trap for Allied shipping. I had a similar combined raid in my game in 4/42; earlier in the war, and the targets weren't as many, but once you pin them against the coast and shut down the airstrip, it's just a slaughter.

With the Yamato surface actions, you left the bombardment TF with a no-retirement order?

The Allies only managed (1) 100 plane strike, (2) a 30 plane strike, and (3) a 15 plane 4E strike versus a 165 CAP.  So the preliminaries and the airfield strikes cut down 50% of the Allied air power.  Mostly, they did go after the carriers so that worked.

I did lose 2BB ( Fuso and Musushai ) and about 4DD to his 1BB ( Washington ) ,2CA,2CL,10DD , my plane loses were about 60 but only lost about 20 pilots and most of those were low 60s guys from CVE . He lost over 200 planes . So the trade off was not so good BUT it finished the fleet at Darwin and as I control PM and GG he would have to make a Channel Dash to try again.Huzzar!

I also re took Kai Island and bagged a few Ozzie troops who will be working on making a new Musushai

I did purpose to expose the BB TF ( patrol do not retire with LRCAP ) to bombers but as I said I did not realise the Beuforts were there, that was a mistake but the fuso BB can only make 24 kts - so we had to get close .

Note the Iron Crosses are mainly handed out to the CL TF that trashed so many allied ships - great stuff . that tf lost only 2DD I think but sadly one of theose was the just arrived Simakaze

No victory can be won with caution.I will not sit around and wait for the End .
