Where do people station their US subs? I'm getting a pretty good return on my investment, even with the dud torpedoes, but I have an idea I could do better.

I could tell you but then i'd have to kill you

Fabertong would know where to send his ASW forces then.

I normally place mine on oil routes and choke pts/shipping lanes. However I am taking real high losses.

Terminus, that's what I do (scenario 16, patch 1.6, january 1942):

Submarines of the Pacific Fleet:
-defensive rôle: around Midway, Johnston, Palmyra, Canton islands
-offensive rôle: somewhere between Japan and Marshall/Marianas Islands
-Argonaut (which is not going to be upgraded lays naughty minefields in enemy hexes)

Submarines of the asiatic fleet:
-around Philipines.

Dutch submarines:
-Mostly Macassar Strait and Sulu Sea.
-019 and 020 mine then reload in India and mine again.

British submarine (1 in reserve)
-Malacca Strait

Later, the US submarines of the Asiatic Fleet will be redeployed in the Dutch east Indies. The Gato submarines will be deployed near Japan. Some people said that the US submarines did not start offensive actions in japanese waters until 1943. This is not true. Check the hyperwar site and you will see this statement is false.

P.S.:
I avoid shallow waters. In fact I never place submarines there. And maybe I am doing something wrong. After all, historically, japanese subs helped to sink the Prince of wales and Repulse. They formed a barrier which detected them. Where? In shallow waters.

P.P.S.:
I don't place submarines at less than 4 hexes of an enemy hex if there are planes.

P.P.P.S.:
this is vs the AI but I would do the same against a human opponent.

I'm not sure who said that, but you're right, the statement is false. Pearl Harbor was sending subs to patrol the empire waters as early as Dec 1941. Maybe the person who made the statement was referring to the inland sea? I think maybe 6 to 10 patrols were made there in 43 (that's where Wahoo was sunk), and then none until mid 45.

I keep mine (04/42) in Dutch Harbor (for operations near Japan), Pearl (central Pacific and Japan), Townsville (for Salomons), Darwin (ops at Java sea) and on Ceylon (Malacca strait).
I don't hasitate to sail shallow waters. My submarines scored plenty of hits on shallow waters of West Malayas.

I base most of my long range subs at Brisbane and Pearl. The shorter range subs work out of Koepang, Rabaul,Midway and Diamond Harbor.

Against AI I'm usually able to keep Wake I., so that will be CentPac forward sub base. These subs operate against Truk and Marianas etc. Other bases are Kiska (operations near coast of Japan), Brisbane (ops against Rabaul etc.), Darwin (east part of DEI), Derby (west part of DEI) and Trimcomalee (almost exclusively against Rangoon).

Now that Air ASW is quite effective (even though not murderous like in 1.5), I try to stay few hexes off the large air bases. Truk is bad place to be next to...I usually send only subs to lay mines in there and stay at least 2-3 hexes away.
