This started at the Depot, but I had to cop one of the photos. Many people inside Germany were upset about this, but it cannot be denied that Germany has a great military tradition, going back to the pre-Imperial days. The Army has always prided itself on being apolitical, and this is no exception.

The Reichstag has these words engraved on it: "For the German people". This is the image the modern Bundeswehr is trying to emphasize.

Wrong photo methinks, Gunny...

Uniformed Germans in the streets of Berlin, carrying torches. Gee, I wonder why that would upset people?

Yes and soon they come invading your country! LOL Come on, be serious. How many more decades will that take to watch normal german affairs...as normal!?? As long as they risk their asses in Afghanistan and Kosovo (for what please?) they´re surely good enough, although I would not trust them any serious defense of nowadays germany (considering Warsaw pact still would exist).

Strange world...

I like to think that when my father helped liberate Europe from Nazi oppression, that he also helped liberate Germany from that same oppression. Germans tried to assassinate Hitler several times and ordinary German dissenters were inprisoned at Dachau along with minorities and Jews. Forgive and forget, just don't forget to forgive.

Just a bit of info on that ceremonial.

It can be traced back to the 30 Years War, although as it stands today it was more or less "invented" as a ceremonie by Frederick the Great.

It was not the first time the Bundeswehr did a "Großer Zapfenstreich". It´s done everytime a minister of defense is changing. As welcome to the new minister of defense and goodbye for the old one. It's been done for the one or other Bundeswehr related event or anniversary and even for dead politicians.

It's hardly to confuse with some SA schmuck mass relays marching through the streets and yelling "Heil Hitler". No goose stepping, involved too
The one is a very old german ceremonie, the other was a pathetic mass gathering that has no historical background and used "cool special effects", like with so many Nazi "ceremonies", to impress the small man on the street.

There was a bit of upset in Germany, but in no way so much as those "usual critics" wanted it to be. Those usual critics want everything Nazi related, I'm damn sure one day they will ask to rename the country too. If the majority of the people that protests against this is communist, extrem left wingers, black block, anarchists and activists then it says a lot about how much of a "problem" it really is. In fact nobody really cares if they do it or not.

I didn´t really hear a bad word about it from any european state official too.

Make no mistake, I'm not comparing the Grosser Zapfenstreich to one of the Nazi torch hollaballoos. I'm just saying that others, of an older generation, might make that association.
