In 1945, the USMC created dedicated 7-man Assault Squads -- I'd be hard-pressed to think of any comparable unit of any nation that was armed like this:

1. Squad Leader (M1 carbine)
2. Flamethrower operator (flamethrower, pistol)
3. Asst Flamethrower operator (M1 carbine)
4. Bazooka operator (bazooka, pistol)
5. Asst Bazooka operator ( M1 Carbine)
6. Demolitions Man (satchel charges, M1 Garand Rifle)
7. Demolitions Man (satchel charges, M1 Garand Rifle)

Jeez--talk about a wrecking crew -- here it is!

In game terms, this unit is armed like this:
(Class -- elite infantry)
M1 Garand x2 50 HE
M9 Bazooka 4 HE, 6 AP
Flamethrower 6 HE
Satchel Charge 6 HE

A caveat: these units were designed for one thing -- bunker busting. To be effective, they needed the support of line infantry and tanks (when available) to suppress the defenders. They went in to finish the job.

I've been wondering why they included bazookas when they had tanks in support and satchel charges as well in the rare case IJA tanks counterattacked. I suppose to be safe. Were bazookas used against bunkers? Also about satchels, can they be used in bunker clearing? I thought flamethrowers were the weapon of choice against bunkers, with grenades as well being used sometimes.

Gunny:

It's hard to imagine any other unit that was better equipped than that Marine squad. But in just small-arms terms my fav is Finn Blitz Squads with Suomi SMG and two DP LMG's.

Tokyo Boy:

Bunkers are always tough and there's no just one way to deal with them. I have not seen that a infantry squad benefits from satchel charges when assaulting bunkers. With or without SC's they assault the bunker with some 8% probability. Flamethrowers, Bazookas and Panzerfausts are useful, but SC's are not.

There's however one way to actually use SC's in bunker busting: hit "C" key and select weapon to fire. With this method you can cause damage to the bunker and, if lucky, destroy it.

I have also destroyed a bunker with AT-Rifles. I used 50mm mortar to pin the thing down and then let the AT-Rifle platoon to fire at the firing slits.

The Marines needed to carry the Bazooka, satchel charge and Flamethrower, its like being ready for different situations each weapon has its limitations were it would not be the proper tool for the job. Tanks most time could not get close to the target.

Bunkers are pretty easy to deal with it just takes a slight delay. The toughest part is spotting them but once you have figured out their position a single smoke round fired either directly or indirectly renders them useless. Next turn shift HE mortar fire onto their position and drive up some loaded troops (those marines sound like a good option) then simply wait and assault. You can even ignore them in some cases but i don't like having them alive and kicking in the back lines.

Of course bunkers that have overlapping fields of fire with a few well placed MG's, mines, barbed wire defences, backed with artillery and manned by suicidal Banzai charging Imperial Japanese soldiers on a bloody beach is an altogether different prospect.
I don't visit Pacific battlefields very often for the above reasons

Well, the AI doesn't poke fun at you if you lose a battle.

I think the concept of using satchel charges and flamethrowers is what they called "corkscrew and blowtorch". I think they would throw in satchel charges, and then hit them with the flamethrowers. Later in the war they would use the flame tanks.

The only draw back to the assault squad is its size it has only 7 men, so it diesn't stand up well to fire, but for shere offensive firepower, I think KG is correct.

I've been playing a UK long campaign using ANZAC infantry/artillery and British armour. As a result, I have come to know and love the ANZAC Heavy Infantry squad - 12 men, Lee-Enfield Rifle, Bren LMG, Anti-tank mine and a 2" mortar. They may not be the heaviest armed, but for versatility and durability they are superb. Had them mugging Jagdtigers in the woods last night :)

Any infantry with a two inch mortar or a 50mm (Japan) in the squad are very good all around infantry.

In H2H there is a German squad with pretty good range on its rifle grenades
