World War II aces and their P-35s ???

I was just reviewing an old game I had going against the AI, in which I successfully defended Rabaul. One of the things that caught my eye was the 34th fighter squadron, still flying P35s.

In this particular game, fighter support for Rabaul was hard to scrape up during the first and second month and I was using mostly Wirraways and a few P-40s that I had saved from PI. But the P-35s were the only fully functional squadron I could dig up. The squadron held the line through two invasion efforts and countless raids by the KB. At one point it was down to just 3 P-35s, but their pilots had experience levels of 88,82 and 80. All three pilots were aces. As I recall a 72 plane fighter group of P-40Es finally showed up to relieve them and they were put into reserve status at Townville.

My question to everyone is, who else has brave stories of these daring aces and their P-35s?

I sent the PI P-35 squadron to China in a CHS game. They did well. I eventually upgraded them to P-40E. They had two or three aces before upgrading. One had 10 or 12 kills.

Yep, I have the P-35s in China as well and for some reason, these guys are 80s and 90s. exp! LOL Guess you can be as good as Erich Hartmann simply if you do enough touch and gos. Going to kick some Nate butt with these until P-40s are available in some number.

It appears to me that these planes did as well as the Nate in terms of performance. Which is to say that it is serviceable as a second line fighter. I read recently that P-43s a variant of the P-35 were sent to China, where they did not fare at all well. I think this has a lot more to do with pilot skill though.

I think the plane fascinates me because of the what-if possibilities. What if the US had entered the war in 1939? I think we all would have known more about the P-35.

A link with some interesting anecdotal stories about P-35s in service. Remember that the P-35 actually beat out (for some reason) the P-36 in AAC trials. They would have been the more predominant fighter in 1940 except that they couldn't meet production demands.

I had a P-26 squadron in China that racked up over 50 kills. Granted, they were mostly intercepting unescorted transports and bombers but a kill is a kill

LOL. Proof that anyone can be an ace under the right circumstances

The P-26 Peashooter was an aptly named plane if there ever was one.
