For anyone waiting on a turn from me, I'm in the process of trying to get rid of a computer virus with Symantec. I hope to have it done by today or tomorrow. Until then I won't be available via e-mail.

Thanks,

PS I'm posting this using another computer which doesn't have WitP on it.

Hmmm.

A computer without WitP on it...that just isn't right!

Gary, is the virus in anyway related to WitP. Anything your fellow gaming partners need to look out for...my computer is Fort Knox, but its always good to know what possible threats are.

I was browsing some Hearts of Iron 2 gamer websites last night and after a series of popups which somehow got past my pop up blocker, I got a message which said my computer was infected with some kind of virus. I've since done a scan using the Symantec web site and I've just newly installed Norton Internet Security 2006 and am running a full system scan now using the latest virus definitions. So far they've both come up empty. So I'm wondering if the "alert" was a false popup that was prompted by the site to look like a Symantec warning. I don't know. Everything looks fine so far and I'm pretty sure if there is one that I must have "contracted" it last night. I haven't e-mailed anyone since yesterday well before the message came up so I hope there is no danger to anyone else. In any case I'm going to make sure I've got everything taken care of before I send anything else out. Might be tomorrow before that happens.

Thanks Nomad. I haven't had too many problems that I know of with Symantec so far (knock on wood) so I'm hoping I won't have any this time. I ran a scan using their online scan service and it came up empty. I'll wait a day or so to see if anything comes up before I send anything to anyone.

Better to be safe than sorry, of course, but there is such a thing as a "false positive". I've heard of legitimate patches for Matrix games that have been flagged as spyware and/or viruses by some people's computers.

I recommend Computer Associates (CA) e-Trust anti-virus. Havn't had a virus issue yet and its the least invasive anti-virus i've tried. (doesn't interfere with other programs or cause other blocking difficulties, unlike Norton (the worst in my opinion!))

Are you sure you haven't just discovered a new WITP bug, or maybe a 'working as designed' feature

I'll call it the 'thou shall not play or browse any other games apart from WITP' feature. It's taken over our lives - now its taking over the computer too

I used to have Norton's but I had to remove it, it was messing up my emails. I was getting corrupted UV turns. I use AVG and do not seem to have any problems. I also us Zonealarm for a firewall.

I use AVG and two or three spy bot programs and haven't had any trouble so far...smart browsing goes a loooong way.

Everything seems to check out OK. I'm going to wait a few days before sending anything out and do a couple more scans just to be on the safe side.

Other than Symantec's site, does anyone know of any other online virus scan sites where I could get a "second opinion" on the health of my machine?

Avast is good and free for home users too:

http://www.avast.com

and Antivir Personal Edition Classic too:

http://www.free-av.com

I personally use Avast but have used the Antivir too. They do detect even better than AVG, it's said. Well, it's bit of matter of taste.

Panda Scan (Google it) worked very well for me GF MkI seems to get a lot of spyware on her computer and once got a very nasty virus. Panda Scan was the only one I found that even detected the virus. Its free too.

NOD32 is a great anti-virus program. It runs whisper quiet until you actually get a real threat.

AVG, they not only shoot down zeros, but turns out they handle computer viruses too.

Thanks Chris! I did Panda's scan and came up clean of viruses but with about 200 spyware programs, probably a little over a years worth of accumulation, since I've only had the PC for little over a year now (Norton apparently didn't detect a single one of them). Anyway I downloaded their trial version of their Titanium scanning software, which had me uninstall Norton, so I hope this will work better than the Norton. I'll see, I can always reinstall the Norton since I still have 362 days of protection left on my subscription (What a waste of money. )
