Since KG was looking for some feedback on historical associations, I thought I'd start one up. I'm going to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 through 1960. Starting with Roberto Clementes first year in the bigs through the year the Pirates won the World Series in dramatic fashion. I'll be done with 1955 today and will post the almanac to browse through tonight.

While I am simming most of the games, I did play out Pittsburgh's opener against Brooklyn. Trailing by one run in the 9th inning, Pittsburgh LF Frank Thomas hit a 2 run homer off of Karl Spooner over the right field wall at Ebbett's field to give the Pirates the late lead. In the bottom of the 9th, with one out and a man on first, I brought in my "closer" (did they have closers in the 50s???) Roy Face to face Roy Campanella. Roy's sat on a fat 1-1 pitch and launched it 432 feet over the left field wall for the ultra-dramatic walk off victory. Ugh...

I have now simmed up through the end of May, and the Pirates sit a comfortable 13.5 games behind the NL leading Braves. The Red Sox are leading the AL...

July 1st, 1955 - League Notes

- The Pirates are still in last place, 19 games behind the Braves. The Dodgers, winners of the NL in real life, are in second place, 8.5 games back.

- Willie Mays leads the NL in HR's (36) and Avg. (.389) IRL, Mays led the league with 51 homers but Ashburn (currently at .345) won the Batting title with a .338 average. May's averrage ended up at .319.

- Clemente is playing as well as I expected in his first year, batting .226 with 16 RBI's and no HR's.

- The biggest dissapointment for the Pirates this season is their #1 pitcher, Bob Friend. In 1955, Bob was 14-9 with a 2.83 ERA. I was counting on him for some good performances. Instead, he has gone 1-9 in 20 games and has a 5.76 ERA.

August 4th, 1955 - Trade Update

- Jackie Robinson will not finish his career as a Brooklyn Dodger. He's been traded to the World Series bound Boston Red Sox for Owen "Red" Friend, a utility SS.

- The 28 year old Friend is batting .216 and has not been put into the day-to-day lineup for the Dodgers. Don Hoak, who had been playing various positions for the Dodgers this year has taken over at 3rd base.

- In Boston, Jackie Robinson (batting .297 with 3 HRs and 33 RBI's) is expected to bat first in the lineup against lefties, with his .365 average against the southpaw pitchers. Could this trade have been made in anticipation of the upcoming World Series? The Braves lead the Dodgers by 12 games and look to be heading to the fall classic. Their #1 pitcher, Warren Spahn, is a lefty with a 15-5 record and a 3.42 ERA.

This should be interesting...

September 30, 1955 - End of Season Update

- The Boston Red Sox (98-56) will meet the Milwaukee Braves (99-55) in the 1955 World Series. What role will the recently traded Jackie Robinson play???

- IRL, the Red Sox finished 4th in the AL (84-70), and the Braves finished 2nd in the NL (85-69). Brooklyn, who won the NL IRL, finished second with a record of 85-69. New York, who won the AL IRL, finished third with a record of 79-75.

- The Pirates finished the season at 59-95, only one less win than real life.

- Roberto Clemente finished the season batting .247 in 154 games, vs .255 in 124 games IRL.

- The Home Run leader was Willie Mays who pounded 65 HRs, 14 better than real life.

- The Batting champ was also Willie Mays, batting .384.

September 30, 1955 - World Series Preview

- The Braves feature one hell of a lineup including a 21 year old Hank Aaron, and 24 year old Eddie Matthews.

1 - Hank Aaron, .297, 30 HR
2 - Chuck Tanner, .287, 6 HR
3 - Eddie Matthews, .332, 50 HR
4 - Joe Adcock, .302, 27 HR
5 - Del Crandall, .288, 28 HR
6 - Johnny Logan, .267, 5 HR
7 - Bobby Thomson, .281, 11 HR
8 - Jack Ditmer, .272, 4 HR

- The Braves rotation is outstanding as well:

1 - Warren Spahn, 18-5, 3.35
2 - Lew Burdette, 15-8, 3.46
3 - Bob Buhl, 14-5, 3.34
4 - Gene Conley, 9-9, 3.58

- Key Releiver - Humberto Robinson: Went 11-4 with a 3.53 ERA and should help out the starting 4 if they get into trouble.

- Boston doesn't have quite the HR numbers to match the Braves, but they do have a lineup that hits for average. Here's what they'll put up against Warren Spahn in game 1:

1 - Jackie Robinson, .295, 7 HR
2 - Norm Zauchin, .245, 24 HR (questionable decision, but he bats .260 vs. lefties)
3 - Ted Williams, .331, 43 HR
4 - Jackie Jensen, .288, 30 HR
5 - Bill Virdon, .299, 6 HR
6 - Billy Klaus, .301, 4 HR
7 - Pete Daley, .191, 1 HR (Ok, bad placement, should be batting 8th)
8 - Billy Goodman, .278, 0 HR

- Boston's pitching will be the key to the series. If they can contain the Braves bats, then Boston may have a shot.

1 - Frank Sullivan, 12-9, 2.85
2 - Willard Nixon, 14-4, 3.49
3 - Tom Brewer, 13-11, 3.16
4 - Ike Delock, 9-9, 3.76

Key Reliever - George Susce: Went 11-3 this season with a 3.18 ERA. He has the endurance of a spot starter, so he may see major playing time if the Red Sox pitching is hit early.

My prediction: I expect the offense to dominate this series, as I think Shaun's engine still needs to be tweaked in favor of the pitching a bit more. Given that, I am picking the Braves in 5.

I'll wait a few hours to play the games and post the results in case anyone else wants to make a prediction....

Thanks for this report, Al. Too bad about the Pirates, but in 5 years they will win it all.

As for the Series, I'll go with the Braves in 6.

1955 World Series - Game 2 (Braves lead series 1-0)
10/1/55
County Stadium, 62 degrees, wind in from CF at 20mph (should limit the long ball today!)
Nixon vs. Burdette

Game Highlights:
- Boston strikes first again in game 2 in the 2nd inning when Jackie Robinson scores from second on a single by Pete Daley. (Red Sox 1, Braves 0)
- In the bottom of the 5th, Ted Williams caught Dittmer's fly ball for an out, then threw out Johnny Logan who was tagging up from second. Nice double play for Ted.
- In the bottom of the 6th, with runners on the corners and one out, Eddie Mathews flies out to center to Bill Virdon (arm 75). Bill Bruton at third base (speed 100) HOLDS!!!??? Not sure what the 3rd base coach was thinking... No harm however, as Adcock singled to center to score Bruton. (Red Sox 1, Braves 1)
- Del Crandall then smacked a single, and the Braves scored again before the end of the inning. (Red Sox 1, Braves 2)
- Humberto Robinson came in for the Braves in the 7th for the second night in a row.
- Bill Henry came in for the Sox in the 7th.
- Crowe had another pinch hit for the Braves, and Hank Aaron followed up with a triple and an RBI. (Red Sox 1, Braves 3)
- Dave Jolly came in to pitch the 8th for the Braves, and with 2 outs, loaded the bases with Frank Malzone coming to the plate. Malzone struck out to end the threat.
- Eddie Mathews tripled to right to start the Braves 8th, and Del Crandall homered to put the Braves ahead 5 to 1
- Tom Hurd came in to pitch and more Braves runs would score... (Red Sox 1, Braves 6)
- In the Sox 9th, Daley Doubled, and pinch hitter Ted Lepcio doubled him in (Red Sox 2, Braves 6)
- Virdon was intentionally walked, and Edelman then came in to pitch for the Braves.
- Edelman walked Klaus, and the Red Sox had the bases loaded with no outs and Ted Williams coming to the plate!
- Williams walked! (Red Sox 3, Braves 6)
- Ernie Johnson came in to pitch and got Jackie Jensen to pop out.
- Norm Zauchin grounded into a double play and the game was over.

Wow, another exciting finish. The Red Sox had the winning run at the plate but couldn't get any more runs across...

Boston 3 7 0
Milwaukee 6 12 0

Lew Burdette gets the Win
Ernie Johnson gets the Save
Willard Nixon gets the Loss

Player of the Game: Del Crandall - 2 hits, 3 RBI

1955 World Series - Game 3 (Braves lead series 2-0)
10/3/55
Fenway Park, 49 degrees, no wind
Buhl vs. Brewer

Game Highlights:
- Bobby Thomson starts off the scoring with a solo shot in the 2nd. (Braves 1, Red Sox 0)
- Bill Virdon hit a 2 run HR to right in the Boston 3rd to put the Sox on top. (Braves 1, Red Sox 2)
- The Red Sox have now led in every game so far.
- Andy Pafko hit a homer to left in the Braves 5th to tie the game. (Braves 2, Red Sox 2)
- Bill Henry came in to pitch for the Sox with 2 outs in the 7th. He walked Aaron and then gave up a base hit and a run. (Braves 3, Red Sox 2)
- He then gave up a 3 run homer to Crandall. (Braves 6, Red Sox 2)
- Hersh Freeman was then called in for his first appearance of the series and got Thomson to ground out to end the inning.
- Eddie Mathews hit a 2 run homer for the Braves in the 8th. (Braves 8, Red Sox 2)

For the third game in a row, the Red Sox fail to hold a lead. I think the best they can hope for now is just avoiding the sweep.

Milwaukee 8 11 0
Boston 2 7 0

Bob Buhl gets the Win
Ray Crone gets the Save
Tom Brewer gets the Loss

Player of the Game: Del Crandall - 2 hits, 1HR, 3 RBI

1955 World Series - Game 4 (Braves lead series 3-0)
10/3/55
Fenway Park, 54 degrees, Wind out to right at 4mph
Conley vs Delock

Game Highlights:
- Boston had the bases loaded with 1 out in the 2nd, but Daley grounded into the inning ending DP.
- Joe Adcock put the Braves on the board first with an RBI gound out in the 5th. (Braves 1, Red Sox 0)
- Del Crandall then knocked in Adcock (Braves 2, Red Sox 0)
- Del Crandall hit a 2 run HR in the 7th. He has become the star of this World Series. (Braves 4, Red Sox 0)
- Frank Malzone hit a HR for the Red Sox in the 7th. (Braves 4, Red Sox 1) It was only the Red Sox 3rd hit of the day.
- Eddie Mathews hit a HR in the 8th. This series is just about over. (Braves 5, Red Sox 1)

As expected, the Braves offense was just too much for the Red Sox. The Braves sweep the Red Sox in 4 games. Jackie Robinson was never a factor for the Red Sox, batting only .182 for the series. And Ted Williams? He only batted .091!!!

Milwaukee 5 10 1
Boston 1 3 0

Gene Conley gets the Win
Humberto Robinson gets the Save
Ike Delock gets the Loss

Player of the Game: Gene Conley - 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1.29 ERA

1956 - Amateur Draft

Looking to improve in all aspects of their game, the Pirates made the following selections in the 1956 Draft.

1) With their first pick (First Overall), the Pirates were leaning towards Bill Mazeroski, but at the last minute they decided to change their pick to youngster out of Beaumont TX named Frank Robinson. :^) Frank should provide quite a punch in the Pirates lineup. As a 21 year old, Frank already has crazy ratings. 81 contact, 90 power, 59 eye, 63 speed and 96 potential. I wonder what the Baseball Gods will do to my team however, as I passed on Maz(a lifetime Pirate) with my first pick!

* The second pick overall went to the Orioles who took Drysdale, and the Cubs took Mazeroski with the third pick.

2) Bob Skinner, LF, should be good off the bench.

3) Al Worthington, SP, since we need help with our rotation too.

4) Bud Byerly, RP, He's 36, so I'm not sure where he's been hiding, but he should be able to contribute for a season or two as he has decent numbers.

5) Frank Torre, 1B, Will be another good lefty to have on the bench. Probably won't ever make a name for himself though... :^)

Can't wait to see how the Bucs improve with Frank Robinson in the lineup!!! Also need to see if I can work a trade for Maz, to get Karma back on my side!

Al

1956 - Free Agent Signings

With money to spend in the free agent market, Pittsburgh decided to go after some big names near the end of their careers..

Roy Campenella, C, 35
Stan Musial, 1B, 36
Warren Hacker, P, 32
Bob Lemon, P, 36

Week 2 - Lost Hacker to the White Sox, who were willing to pay too much, in my opinion
Week 3 - Lost Bob Lemon to the Reds, even after I countered with a better offer! Bastard!
Week 3 - Not wanting to lose another player to the Reds, I outbid them for Stan Musial, making Stan my highest paid player at just over 1 Million a year.
Week 4 - I see that Roy Campanella is now being offered 1.3 million by the Orioles. What the heck, I've got lots of money... Let's offer him 1.5!! Ok, he's leaning my way now...
Week 5 - Son of a ..... The Senators are now offering Campanella 1.7 million for 1 year. Grrr... Let's dig a little deeper and offer him 1.9! Oh crud, the slider won't let me go higher than 1.8 million.... Oh well, it'll have to do! Ok, he accepted... but he better be worth it!!!

So Musial and Campanella will be Pirates, along with Frank Robinson, in 1956...

1956 - Start of the Season

Well, spring training is over, and Pittsbugh has moved up to 6th in the MLB Power Rankings. Our weak pitching is still probably holding us back. Here's our rotation heading into 1956 with their numbers last year:

1) Bob Friend, 2-21, 5.78 ERA
2) Vern Law, 5-17, 3.70 ERA
3) Al Worthington, Rookie - no minor league experience
4) Max Surkont, 4-7, 3.64 ERA

Looks bad, huh? Our lineup, on the other hand, looks damn nice....

1) Stan Musial
2) Frank Thomas
3) Frank Robinson
4) Roy Campanella
5) Gene Freese
6) Roberto Clemente
7) Dick Groat
8) Curt Roberts

Will be interesting to see how the old guys do. In last years version, players would crap out by age 34. Would be nice to see somebody that does well over the age of 35.

Yeah, with free agency in this era this is when history takes a definite alternative turn.
I'll still debating on whether to go this route, or turn financials off with either historical or draft rosters.

Oh, well -- I can debate the ins and outs of the reserve clause in another thread.

I'm pleased that the Pirates decided to spend some cash in this alternative universe.

1956 Update - Oh Crap...

Forgot to look at ratings changes before starting the season. Doh! Check out what happened with the old farts I signed.

Campanella (con -19, pow -11)
Musial (con -2, pow -5, eye -3, spd -5, hnd -6, arm -4)

sigh...

1956 Update - June 1st, 1956

Ok, so the Pirates are definitely doing better this year. Their 22-22 record has them in 4th place in the NL, 4 games behind the Braves. They have the 6th best offense in the Majors, yet only the 11th best defense.

Frank Robinson is proving to be an animal in only his first year. He's batting .333 with 13 HR and 38 RBI. Campanella is doing ok, batting .273 with 3 HRs. Musial's bat is still decent, as he's batting .324. Clemente is batting .275.

Pirates pitching is still an issue, as Pittsburgh doesn't have a starter with a winning record. I may start looking to trade for a starter...

The individual career arcs is something that Shaun mentioned he was going to look into. In PS2005, this is why I instinctively draft young real players with high potential ratings (and other ratings I value). No one over age 30, if possible.

As for league stats, I find the model to be pretty good. Two days ago, I ran a historical season (financials OFF) with PS2005 and got end-of-season team batting averages and ERAs within historical ranges.

Bryan K has already done extensive study into this, as mentioned elsewhere.

Al, you keep it going, man. The itch to get ahold of this game iteration is driving me to distraction LOL. Trade one of the good-hitting geezers for a pitcher! Campanella seems to be trade bait. The fans are grumbling.

1956 Update - June 22, 1956

Pittsburgh acquired young starting pitcher Jim Bunning from the Detroit Tigers. At 22, Jim is already 69/64/66 with a potential of 79 (and rising). IRL, Bunning had a very good career with 224 wins, 184 losses and a career 3.27 ERA.

Pittsburgh sent utility player Roman Mejias to the last place Tigers.

In other trade news, the Dodgers got rid of 37 year old Jackie Robinson, trading him to the Red Sox for Owen Friend.

The Yankees lead the AL by 4.5 games, and the Pirates are 7 games behind the league leading Dodgers.

Trade one of the good-hitting geezers for a pitcher! Campanella seems to be trade bait. The fans are grumbling.

LOL, that's the first thing I tried, and I couldn't get any decent pitching (not even a prospect) for him. The AI's not that dumb I guess....

The Tigers came through for me though, I think the trade I made will pay dividends in seasons to come.

Glad you are reading along!

Red - they came to me with the offer, so it wasn't a steal so much as it was a gift.

1956 Update - All-Star Break

The Pirates sent two player to the 1956 All Star game. Frank Robinson and Stan Musial.

The Pirates are having a better year, but are still a player or two away from a pennant. Their record is now 39-42, 9 games behind the NL leading Dodgers. In the AL, the Yankees are pulling away.

Al Worthington, one of my draft picks, is my only starter with a winning record. He's sitting at 5-3 with a 2.85 ERA. Ironically, 5 of my 6 relievers have winning records...

1956 Update - Trade Deadline Nearing

The Pirates may be out of the pennant race, but their GM is still making deals. On August 2nd, the Braves came knocking for Pirates closer, Bud Byerly. Byerly is having a dissapointing year for the Pirates (0-5, 5.35 ERA, 28 saves), so the Pirates were eager to see what the Braves were willing to offer. After considering a starting pitcher, the Pirates settled on 25 year old 3B Eddie Matthews. Eddie is batting .276 with 28 HR's this year and is a heck of a prospect for the re-bulding Pirates. Matthews will replace 22 year old Gene Freese at 3rd. Freese was batting .315 with 5 HRs and should provide good trade bait before the deadline.

1956 Update - September 1st

The Pirates are in 7th place in the NL, but they have already surpassed their win total from last year. Also, the Dodgers have tanked in the second half of the season, and the Braves appear headed to play in the World Series for the second straight year.

The individual career arcs is something that Shaun mentioned he was going to look into. In PS2005, this is why I instinctively draft young real players with high potential ratings (and other ratings I value). No one over age 30, if possible.

Yeah - we've got a thread going in the beta site about the career arcs - they're distinctly pyramidal at the moment, with a steep climb and a steep drop-off. Hopefully that will be sorted out over the next week or two - but its a nasty job to balance, of course, because he has to ensure that it doesn't throw the overall league numbers off.

The trade AI in this iteration seems to really value pitching, so that's not an easy thing to do. I'm a bit shocked at the Mejias-for-Bunning trade, actually, as I've not seen the '06 AI willing to make a trade anything like it!

The itch to get ahold of this game iteration is driving me to distraction LOL.

Should have tested with us! ... just kidding - but I'd have loved to have your insights on it.

Okay, off to start my real-players association!
