When I was setting up my first turn to a game, I noticed that on turn one, and turn one only, you can add new planes and/or pilots to air units, but none are deducted from the pilot pools. I proceeded to load up all of my air units with new planes and pilots until they were maxed out. I ran the first turn, half expecting that those seemingly free pilots had been taken out of the pools at the end of the turn. To my delight, they really were free! The IJA pool was 400+ and the IJN pool was right at 100. No pilots were removed from the pool yet all of my air units had been brought up to full strength. Who says you can't get something for nothing!

Is this a bug, or are you supposed to be able to get free pilots on turn one?

Not sure if it is a bug or not, but its worth checking the pilots ratings of those you have just added as you may just have loaded up your air groups with green pilots.

The number of pilots in the pilots list is the number of trained pilots available. On top of this you have an unlimited supply of green pilots which, on average, have half the experience of the trained pilots available.

However, I would have expected it to use the trained pilots before selecting green ones.

This is a feature.

Airgroups in existance at the start of the war had pilots assigned but this is not properly represented in the data read from the editor. Therefore a special function is used the first time that an airgroup is "touched" to build up it's pilot ranks without drawing down the pool. You could get around this by going into the editor and adding the appropriate number of pilots to every airgroup.

Thanks Don - I'm glad to hear that. I'm currently working on a turn one as Japan. I knew I could get free pilots, but was restraining myself because I thought it was a bug, not a feature.

Watch out VSWG! I think there's some good sushi bars in Honalulu...

"Honalulu"? Is that near "Sidney"?

In case you're talking about Honolulu: you probably mean the field kitchens that are build ATM to cater the expected hordes of Japanese prisoners... Really, "sushi bar" is quite an euphemism: on the menu are frozen blocks of raw fish thrown between the prisoners... I call it the "Fabertong Special"!

These are clearly trained pilots (average experience ratings in the 70's and 80's).

Yep.
The pilots will be generated roughly at the air group experience level, rather than pool level.

Geez, and I didn't do that because I thought it was a bug.

Did your opponent tell you it was a bug?

No, I can't even say that. I asked about this over a year ago and no one could explain it. This is the first I've heard that it's a feature.
