A few quick questions:
Is night bombing modeled in the game?
What is the difference between cargo and transport TFs?
The various coloured circles around a base represent what?
And,yes, I know I should look more closely at the manual but the forum is more friendly!

Night bombing is modeled, but not very well. Most people have home rule about it, because it is too efficient when you send (for example) 100 B-17E night bombing an AF.

My home rule is that, except for city attack, only a squadron/Chutai per airfield may be used for night bombing. With this rule, I just bombed Lae 3 night in a row and destroyed a total of 4 Allied AC, something close to realistic numbers.

Cargo and transport are both transport TF but if you let the AI choose ships it will only include AK in cargo TF. If you choose yourself the ships create a transport TF instead (by the way barge, amphibious TF also exist and are other version of transport TF only useful for the AI).

The various circle are range and depend of what you have selected, either a Tf (one circle showing maximum range in one phase (the next night phase)) or an air unit (two circle, showing normal and extended range IIRC).

Black circle = current aircraft at regular range.
Red circle = current aircraft extended range.
Green circle = current TF move at night.
Yellow circle = current TF move at day (I think, either that, or I've got them reversed).

The range circles should be considered "approximate" tho.  the problem is, they often overlap hexes where they shouldn't (as circles don't match that well to hex sides).  Best to just count the hexes if you really want to see coverage.

But I do find it useful to be able to do a fast click to see my approximate patrol coverage, so you can kinda see the gaps.  Also the move radius for the ships can help you plan (but again, your ships might not actually move their whole move, if they have to burn ops points to refuel escorts).

Green circle is current TF move radius (one phase, so night).
Black circle is current air unit normal range.
Red circle is current air unit extended range.
There is no yellow circle.  A yellow "path" of hexes is the current TF's intended course.

There most certainly is. According to the manual the yellow circle is how far the TF can go at flank speed.

Although the 'middle' column of TF types on the TF selection screen are intended to drive what type of ships the AI chooses, I find them useful sometime to help me keep track of what I intended for the TF to do.

I turn on "Task Force Move Radius" and I only get green circles. *shrug* In any event, those circles are misleading since they don't confirm to the hex ranges that the program actually uses.

I was going from memory - the yellow circle was probably just one of my sleep-deprived delusions (or probably better said, "illusions").

But as all have said, the circles are "mostly" worthless.  Do NOT base any critical decisions on them.  Just count the hexes yourself.
