I just played a Lost Victories scenario where I had to exit as many troops as I could after taking the objective hexes. I had little HT carrying capacity so I worked at moving people with trucks. So the scenario was one of escorting trucks. And the trucks got slaughtered. I did get a Moderate victory but still.... Things I learned 1) Your own airplanes like to destroy any truck of yours within 5-7 hexes of their flight path.... arggggh  2) Even the tiniest enemy units(like the cooks and the latrine builders) will take a shot at your precious trucks. Nothing is as juicy as a truck. 3) There are few times(about 10%) where you can move your truck down a road and drop off your passengers on the front line ready for combat. What will happen 90% of the time is that you will brutally "discover" new units. Remember those numbers because the fast movement you desire requires work to be done before-hand 4) Recon Recon Recon - I would go so far as to draw up a quick plan on paper to find out : - Lines of sight - Hiding spots - rather than drawing a line from where your trucks are and where they need to go, you have to think in terms of a TUBE of safety. This will help you also to plan your recon better. 5) Stop with the wishful thinking. Bridges, streams, and bushes at the edge of forests DO NOT happen by accident. They will kill your trucks... dead :) Those areas will need to be taken care of. Off-load passengers and let them fight. That's their job. I usually have two leg units that advance forward to surpress anything that moves. 6) While we all like our tanks and stuff, the best friend of your trucks is infantry. They can surpress MORE targets and clear out MORE terrain than tanks. MORE is better than the flashy SPARSE attacks by a tank. 7) With Command and Control on you going to be dealing with trucks that won't go where you want. Those cones of movement narrow down rapidly and if your passenger unit goes into retreat, you're in a heap of trouble. Stop Before Full movement and drop off if possible. 8) A lot of the problem with trucks is moving the full movement. There's something real gratifying about that full advance but RESIST IT! If you feel you have to move a truck hex by hex, then it's likely that BAD things will happen. In that case just stop altogether and move up non-truck units. Or unload your passenger and send them forward. They usually have one or two movement points left. And if all is clear, you will be able to pick up your passengers again with little loss of time. 9) Moving half, dropping off and then hiding is the ideal. But even just moving the truck out of the passengers drop-off hex is usually not bad. 10) If you want speed, just take a look at the movement hexes highlighted and choose a half-way point. You will have more options when surprises occur. Trucks maybe have a low point value unit but they provide a major STRATEGIC advantage on the tactical level of SPWAW. Mobility with enough force to smash resistance or the ability to shore up defences. ZoomBoy Developing a iso-tile 2D RPG with skills, weapons, and adventure.
