Looking for sophisticated house rules in order to add another pace to the game, I wanted to know if someone had a good opinion and good dates about the monsoon season in the Burma theater, and the cold season in the North. I know these things are addressed to a certain extent (there's a cold season penalty for operations in the northern theater right?) but to me, they are just too light (I mean generous in a way) right now to be of significant use - specifically in south-eastern Asia.

Could anyone please give details about the effect of weather on the war in Burma? I kinda remember there were simply no large-scale operations from a certain point to another due to terrible conditions in the jungle (I mean, apart from Chindits raids and all)? Suspending offensive operations and air ops given certain conditions (jungle hex + certain time in the year) would definitely slow down the pace in Burma, and leave the players with a much more realistic approach to the theater (instead of having the Allies steamrolling the place as soon as late 1942 like we see it in some the AARs so far). Any idea?

Click on the 'Geography' section.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/bm.html

quote:

Climate:

tropical monsoon; cloudy, rainy, hot, humid summers (southwest monsoon, June to September); less cloudy, scant rainfall, mild temperatures, lower humidity during winter (northeast monsoon, December to April)

Thx witpqs - but I am more interested in your opinions, and what you got from your readings. Someone on the AAR section just made the suggestion that the advance in Burma (or rather the lack of) was maybe more the result of a political (let's say operational) decision than the consequence of the harsh weather conditions. I wondered how hard, indeed, those conditions may actually be in your view. Should the strain on the units located in the jungle hex be tougher during certain periods? (they would get fatigue points more quickly, would need more replacements...?) Would warfare be actually possible? Is there is a houserule to make, should it take into account the weather and/or rather the reluctance to engage a real fight in the theater? What do you think? Should June to September be an "off-limits" time when there's like a cease-fire on the Burmese frontline if the Japanese player didn't manage to reach the outskirts of the jungle?

I would not go so far as house rules. Maybe that will prove to be needed, but I don't see it yet. Yes, they could throw in more fatigue effects or what have you for troops in certain terrain types during the monsoon. I believe they already slow down the flow of supplies during monsoon so that's covered.

BTW, I have not done much reading on the Burma area campaign, so others would be better to comment further.
