Soviet Progvev-T, a gas-dynamic minesweeper. This 37-tons beast was a T-54 tank base and a MiG-15 jet engine on top. The trawler had also a container with kerosene that allowed to clear 6 kilometers of road without refueling. Apparently, this dragon used the MiG-15 engine to uncover and destroy mines with heat.

Just think what it would do to a company of grunts.

When you fired it up, wouldn't the tank shoot off in the opposite direction?

The chassis is a bit overloaded. Also a hit on the fuel tank would have impressive results.

I imagine the Jet Engine/kerosene tank strapped on top is unarmored, flammable, and easy to see and hit.

So why bother mounting it on an armored chassis?

Stability of platform perhaps (tank chassis surely must be heavy and stable - that must have been just perfect for this - what other chassis would be able to withstand the jet engine in work)?

BTW, IMHO, this is not front line clearing device to be used under enemy fire...

A very low profile target that will go  when in contact with the enemy.

I'd hate to say but this is not even remotely close to a T-54 tank. I don't even know what "tank" that is as there is nothing ever been in production like it. Whoever Adrian is I'd like to see his resources that show this is a T-54 tank. It looks like something someone PS'd together.

"The T-54/T-55 fired a wide range of ammunition, including armor-piercing-tracer; high-explosive; armor-piercing, capped-tracer; high-explosive fragmentation; high-explosive, fin-stabilized; and high-velocity, armor-piercing, discarding sabot-tracer.

Like the T-44, the T-54 used a torsion bar suspension system. The AV-12 diesel engine was mounted transversely to drive the rear sprockets and produced 520 horsepower.

Five rubber-tire road wheels were mounted per side. There were no return wheels; the track ran across the top of the road wheels on its return.

The distinguishing identification feature of the T-54/T-55 series is the gap between the first and second road wheels. The T-54 was the first Soviet tank able to operate completely underwater. It could cross rivers at depths down to 18 feet by using a snorkel."

ah but unlike the T-35 "Land battleship", the mighty KV laughed at all yonder girly man AT guns of the day. to quote Steel Panthers, "Tink!.....tink!.....tink!tink!tink!"

They had to deploy a woosie AA gun to take our portable beer fridge out

Given the time period, I agree its probably a T-34, pretty weird setup for a "mine sweeper" however not the first dumb idea ive seen.

Still think its a T-54/55 chassis. The gap between the 1st and 2nd road wheel is noticeable in the picture.

Fear the wiki, but the chassis is pretty good match.

It was a standard tracked chassis that the Soviets put to a lot of uses.

The Soviets gave the Libyans the equipment for a standard tank army during the Cold War. It came with the standard ToE, which was designed for use in Central Europe. Almost all of the engineer vehicles were useless in North Africa.

I think you're right. The T54/55 is a linear descendent of the T34 via the T44, but (AIR) with the Christie suspension replaced with a torsion bar suspension.

(I gave away all my reference books when I went to England, so I'm not sure.)

The Soviets used jet engines for lots of things - like really 'nifty' tank washing machines and de-icing systems. Noting cleans all that dirty fallout and bio war gunk of your T55 like a Mig engine and some soap and water. Also nice for unfreezing a stuck railroad switch.

I think the nuclear mortar the USA fielded was one. If I recall correctly they even fielded a nuclear round for a recoilless rifle as well. Im sure people were breaking down the door to volenteer to crew these weapons.
