Turn 13 in my current campaign as Sov vs AI Axis on normal.

Last turn some of the axis mobile forces went a bridge too far and their spearhead was cut off and isolated behind my lines with Axis counterattacks to free them being successfully repelled. To my surprise this included the elite Wiking and LAH divisions, as well as the the 25th Motorized, the XIV Panzer Corps HQ as well as the 1st and 2nd Hungarian motorized brigades.

During this turn I easily mopped all of these formations with mild losses to my own forces, for example Wiking surrendered (16k dead or captured) with 4k losses on my side, about equal results against the other divisions.

But I'm still wondering about the likelihood of an elite SS division giving up that easily, when rescue is just 2 hexes away. Also what effect will this have on the AI's offensive ability for the rest of the campaign, losing a motorized corps and 2 elite divisions that early in the campaign might prove nasty.

(Also - even though this is not simulated in the game - this nicely illustrates the operational mistakes an SS division - compared to a Wehrmacht division - could make )

The surrender mechanism can give peculiar results, but if enough force is applied, units should surrender when isolated regardless of how good they are, but the better ones should not surrender in the first battle unless they can't retreat.

Hmm, I see. I'm already excited how this campaign will play out, for the Axis side this is a brutal loss I think.

good job! it's only 9/11/41 and Germany has lost it's tip of the spear. I'd say you already won the game.

That's pretty sloppy for the computer to allow units to get that far out.
